Now this one has me interested. I've never seen the series but everyone I've talked to mentions how fantastic it is. I've been waiting for it to come out on Blu-ray. It's not cheap however! But then with 4 full seasons plus Razor, the original Miniseries and lots of bonus material, it's no surprise.
FYI: The release date is tentatively scheduled for July 28, 2009.
Who here has seen it? Did you like it?
Kal

It's a pretty good show and most of the episodes are really good, some are great, and none are bad IMO. My only beef with these was they were shot with a really gritty dirty look to them. Even re-ewatching some of the first season or 2 on HD-DVD was not as good as some normal DVD's. I think this was done on purpose to emphasize the "last remnants of humanity ina rag-tag fleet of ships fleeing through space" etc. Still the acting and story line are very good and the new Cylons are bad-ass. No more actors dressed in Chrome plastic suites. They do pay homage homage to the original show in "Razor".

The original series is a campy piece of crap and only serves as the base concept in the new one. The new one is not only the best science fiction ever on TV, it is an extremely good drama.
It is primarily social and religious commentary, and while much of it is "timeless", it was actually making very timely commentary. As such, you need to think back to what was going on in the world during each of the seasons to get the full commentary.
You should enjoy it. Very good character development. They tried to stay with basic character ideas in the original, but many were so stupid that they had to dink with them. All the "dinking" was well done--expecially Baltar (which in the original was a stupid character with no definition of his motivation at all).
<GEEKOUT>
I've never liked the "aircraft carrier" analogy in science fiction. It is pretty stupid when you get down to it. In space, you don't need fighters to attack anything. They do nothing better than the big ship with the potential exception of surgical strikes on a planet surface. Why launch fighters at another ship? A big ship can carry bigger weapons and blast anything with more firepower than scores of fighter squadrons.
But, the original used this lame analogy so this did. They also use the approach that fighters can fly both in space and atmosphere.
But, I have to say, this series has what is for me one of the coolest scenes ever aired on broadcast television. Unlike simpleton stupid explanations of faster-than-light (FTL) travel such as those in Star Trek (where traveling FTL is just like sub-light only "faster"), BSG employs the "hyperspace" via wormhole mechanism. I much prefer this mechanism. Basically, the ship's drive creates a stable naked singularity which instantaneously moves the ship from one point in spacetime to another point in spacetime, then the ship lets signularity disappear (since a naked singularity is inherently unstable). (Of course, they don't deal at all with the logical time travel problems that come with this--but you can't have everything.)
Obviously, the bigger the gravity well you are in, the more dicey it is to create a singularity that is stable and goes where you want.
Anyway, the cool scene: for a surprise attack, they jump the huge battlestar into a planet's upper atmosphere. Once there, it, of course, starts falling toward the planet surface like a rock. As it falls, it launches all its fighters, a few miles from the surface, it excutes a dangerous jump out (it is pretty far in the planets gravity well at that point). The last part of the scene is filmed from the ground (i.e. the perpective of the people on the ground). Looking up, we see the Battle start disappear into the wormhole, but all the air it is pushing doesn't stop and a moment later, gail force wind crashes down on the surface. I'm geeky enough to have watch that scene about a half a dozen times. Its probably the first scene I'll watch in my theater in HD.

I could not disagree more. This was an excellent directorial decision in my opinion. It sucked me in more than pristine looking stuff ever would. I never found it in the way, but more gave it great atomosphere. It would not have near the impact if it looked pristine.

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with Collectible Cylon) [Blu-ray] (2004)
Amazon has reduced the price on the limited edition 'Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series' Blu-ray.
The online retailer is now selling one of the best science-fiction dramas on television in high-definition for $149.99 (57% off suggested retail price).
This collection includes all four seasons, the miniseries, and a collectible cylon figurine. It doesn't, however, contain 'Battlestar Galactica: The Plan.'
An enormous amount of content here. I'm about 1/2 way through watching it. Highly recommended for any Sci-Fi fans (or even non-sci-fans I suppose as I my wife likes it too!)
