I currently have a Sony 1270.

Would an NEC 9PG be a worthwhile upgrade or am I better off waiting and getting an 8" EM machine (probably would go with a Marquee at some point)?

Get a Marquee their great for your back! and buy it from Curt It will be mostly set up when you get it.

NEC 9PG is an 8" EM, I'd say it would be worthwhile if the tubes are clean. I believe it may also have HD-144 lenses?

I thought the 9PG was a 7" (although I think Curt calls them oversized 7 inchers). But then I think I've seen the same thing about the 1270 being called both a 7" & 8" machine.

Tubes are around 3K hours and he rates them G(6.5), B(7.5), R(8). It is very local and a good price, so I will at least take a look.

I just don't know if it will be enough of a step up to be worth pulling the Sony down from the ceiling, putting the NEC up and learning how to setup a different machine. Especially post heart attack where I will need to get several people over to help with taking down one and putting up the other.

My 2 cents probably worth less than that is that almost no 8" set is worth looking at these days unless it had fairly decent tubes and a 6 isn't that. Unless you have a line on a cheap green I would pass and look for something with more decent tubes. On the other hand if your 1270 has toasty tubes it might be worth the upgrade.

i went from a 1272 to a barco 1208 which is an 8" machine. the difference in clarity was well worth it. if it is easy to acquire and cheap i would go for it. the nec's are not a very intuitive machine to learn, but i hear they look great once set up. if you can get a deal on one don't pass it up. plop it in the corner and when you have the time and motivation start playing with it.

Definitely go see it. I have a 9PG+ and I love it. Just watched the last BR Harry Potter last night. Very sharp. They also have lots of control, though some consider it a pain in the a$$ to set up regardless of the extra control. Once it is set up it's easy to maintain. Tubes don't sound great though.

I've never seen a 12XX series to compare it with though. If the seller still has it up, get a demo of it. I'd say if under $500, it's worth it (if only for the lenses), that way you could get a 8500 marquee and put the nice color corrected HD144 lenses on it (I think Joust has the mounting plates).

Still, if you are like me and don't want to spend a bunch of time messing with upgrades and just want to get the very best projector you can, I'd wait for a better machine. Save up and try to see if there are any 9" machines to be had. There seem to be more and more of them these days.

Either way, good luck! I'll be interested to hear what you think of the noise, sharpness and such compared to your 1270. Thumbs Up

Yes, worthwhile upgrade. Don't spend too much. I sold my 6PG for around $150 or so, with tubes in the same condition as in the said projector.

It very likely can't do 1080p either, so if 1080p is a must, forget it. Even if it can do 1080p, it will be really pushing the old beast hard.

I agree with Mr. Green, 720p is great, and 1080i is also great for longer viewing distances(imo). Depends how you feel about the scanlines. 1080p will be way too soft...

if it's that CR machine it doesn't have the good lenses on it, looks like someone put HD6's on it. But for $200. bucks whatya have to lose. Surprised

A plain PG will have HD-6 lenses.

I'd aim higher these days, but it depends on budget and availability.

I went from a sony 1252 to a 9PG+ so from first hand experience, I'd say go for it if the price is right on the PG. The improvement is very significant. I'm now running 1280x960 into the 9PG+ and loving it. Of course I'd get a 9" machine if a deal came my way but I'm pretty happy with the PG right now. Hope this helps,

You're going ES to EM, the difference in resolving power will be very significant. Actual, physical tube size between so called "8" tubes and so called "7" tubes is so tiny as to be meaningless, the actual difference in the image size is mere mm's.
