As the subject line suggests the area outside the blanking area is bright enough to show up just outside of the black border of
my screen.

Is this just a case of my G2 being too high - I have adjusted it with a greyscale pattern and it seemed reasonable.

I've adjusted my g2 levels to the point at which I can only see half the bars on a greyscale ire chart
and still I can see light projected from behind the frame around the raster. (outside the blanking area)

Any Ideas, or is it just the way this projector is (Barco Data 500)

Cheers.

I'm not sure what controls the Barco has but it sounds like you are adjusting a sub brightness control and not the G2.

I used curt's guide to set it - http://www.curtpalme.com/ES_Tube_Projector_Gray_Scale_Adjustment2.shtm

The colour itself looks great when done it's just the leakage from behind the frame that's doing my nut in !

If anyone can think of something else I can check please post.

Cheers.

Newer Barcos could show ABL pulse like you described, but 500 don't have ABL.

If I remember correct my BG500 didn't had similar problem.

What is your source?

Maybe there is something wrong with resolution timings, try different resolution or source.

Several different sources - htpc / ps2 /skybox

The light isn't bright but is visible when the room is dark. I'm wondering whether it's simply down to the way the lenses
work ? ( I believe thy're hybrid on the data 500)

G2 are fine, if rasters are barely visible when you look in to the tube with video black test picture.
contrast at zero
brightness at 50

If you get those light borders when picture have bright objects, then it's haloing inside tube and lens. Air coupled tubes always have it some amount and it could be seen in light colored wall. Some use black masking in tube face, it can be made of black carton or tape.

That explains it, I do have light coloured walls, as long as it's considered normal. Thanks for the info !
