I have a Draper V series "Ultimate Access" screen that seems to be deteriorating - it sticks to itself and wont come down with out manual intervention. Installed in 2001. Read with interest about washing it with Simple Green, but doubtful that will help long term. Unfortunately it was installed without an opaque backing which probably would have prevented this problem. Cost for replace is quoted at ~$4K which is beyond the pale right now. Does anyone know of an opaque coating or blacking material that I could somehow fix to the back of the screen? Thanks for any help...

I cleaned mine with Simple Green a year or so ago. It is just now starting to get sticky again. I thought about adding something to the back like you mention, but I am concerned about the extra bulk on the roller. I don;t think there is enough room in the case.

I'd call Draper, their customer service is really good when it comes to good suggestions for problems like this.

What's causing the screen material to get sticky? Is it deteriorating or is it something in the air?

Material compositions often change over time. Typically, one material will degrade faster than another due to many different factors - evaporation, decomposition, mechanical wear, etc. Regardless of the mechanism, the process often exposes something that was once encapsulated.

In the case of the screen, there's probably an internal adhesive - the binder that put the front and back of the screen together - that's migrating through one or both of the surfaces of the screen and making the surface sticky - and I'd imagine, attracting airborne dirt and dust in the process. I imagine there's no stopping it, but I'd definitely call Draper and get their advice.

When I talked to Draper about mine, they suggested trying to clean it with Simple Green but the screen would need to be replaced to fix the problem. In my case the screen was retracted and stored for an unknown amount of time. The screen material is vinyl, which I imagine the sticky substance is a chemical releasing as the material ages.

We have a few screens just like that here at work. I spent a few hours cleaning them with simple green. I thought I was going to pass out, and a few times was pretty sure I was hallucinating. Smile Anyways, it worked for a few months and the screens started sticking again. We finally just disconnected the motors so they stay down all the time.

Oh, and that was the suggestion straight from draper. The other solution was we needed to buy another screen.
