I was watching The Day the Earth Stood Still last night.[1951 Version.] It got me thinking about when did the modern Sci-Fi movie get it's start.
By modern I mean with Good special Effects and reasonable props. Like Robots that were mechanical.
And I mean for the day they were made not compared to now.
I say it was The Forbidden Planet 1955 with Walter pidgeon and Ann Francis And the big star Robbie the Robot.
If you can think of another, Great I love to watch old well done movies. 
Please don't make this a pissing contest just share your thoughts.
And please post year of release and the star of movie if any.

I *love* Forbidden Planet! Cheezy in some ways, but it had a really good story line / moral.
I think Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927) would have to be one of the earliest, if not the earliest...
IMDB sez Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was 1969.

Well I guess I'm going to have to watch Metropolis It's been brought to my attention repeatedly but no one I have asked about it had ever seen it.

What I consider modern would have to be 2001 a Space Odyssey (1968) or Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) anything before that the special effects were sort of ho-hum. I did watched a little bit of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951) off the blu-ray and it looked very good, effects were ok...but not great, the melodramatic music made it hard to take serious.

Yes the special effects before 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY were bad BY comparsion. 2001 was ground breaking just like FORBIDDEN PLANET. IMHO
That's the question were there groundbreakers before FORBIDDEN PLANET. It being the Gran Daddy to all after it.

The oldest Sci-Fi stuff I remember watching as a kid was from 1936 some of the Flash Gordon Serials. I'm sure there were some before that.

Mike your right on track. The FLASH GORDON stuff is exactly what I going for. It how ever was not "modern" in the sense that strings could be seen holding the spacecraft up, no wow I've never seen that done before kind of thing.
I know I'm not giving enough description of "modern" but without writing a dissertation I just don't know how.

I've heard of, and seen this. It was, and is, the ground breaking of all Sci-Fi.
And is credited as such and deservedly so.
But again it is not a Modern Style movie.
I feel bad about this you really are going to great effort.

Thinking about it more, "The War of the Worlds" (1953) was what I consider being very ground breaking. Probably because it was in color, it's hard to think of something being modern when it was in black & white. The first time I saw it I was terrified.
Something about "Forbidden Planet" just didn't do it for me, perhaps because Leslie Nielsen was in it and just because all the silly films he has made it's hard to take him in a serious role.

A good point I haven't seen it in so long I forgot it was before "FORBIDDEN PLANET". Funny how few movies there are that changed the movie making world, and how long between breakthroughs.
Shirley I mean, surely Leslie Nielson is Hard to take serious to us now, but back then who knew?

great movie. picked it up on LD a year or so back (only available in the format  ) and it still stands the test of time. Garry and Sylvia Anderson really knew how to write good stuff without the puppets... i have the series UFO on dvd, but it won't play on any of my players... sigh.
