Hey all,

we'll be moving into our first house in a few weeks (we get the key next wednesday) and I've managed to secure one of the upper floor bedrooms for the XG110LC Cool So that's where I'll build my little kingdom, but unfortunately I don't have the luxuary of making it a dedicated home cinema room - it'll also serve as guestroom.

We're currently looking at and buying floors (wood/laminate) and wall paint for all parts of the house. From all I've read I should and want to push my luck and try and get the room as dark as possible - however, black floor, walls and ceiling aren't an option I'm afraid.

I'm looking for advice on 'acceptable' solutions so that we I can get not the most, but close to it out of the projector, whilst keeping the room 'liveable' for guests too. I'm considering this floor: http://www.byggmax.com/se-sv/Prod/PID-13939.aspx

Would that be ok? (Up until now we've had an apartment, with the CRT hanging in the main room, which has white ceiling and walls and a light coloured floor. )

Like I said I won't get away with black walls and ceiling, so what could you guys recommend as a wife-accepted alternative that might be labeled 'as good as it gets' considering? I might get away with dark grey walls, but for the ceiling I'm sceptical. How important is it to have an all-dark/black ceiling, or would a greyish or brownish ceiling with a darker zone towards the screen (I plan to get a fixed screen) be a good solution too?

Any advice, pictures and suggestions are warmly welcomed!
Cheers,
Joris

This, by the way, is the room I have at my disposal (Sovrum). Sizes are in millimeters:

Any good ideas for how to furnish it and how to orientate the pj and screen?

Go dark blue walls, dark flooring with a dark colored carpet. Black celing with white borders to make it stand off. Maybe a crown moulding with lights in it facing the celing?

I used 2 shades of brown, darker on the walls slightly lighter shade on the ceiling, still deep and dark, and purple carpet. Also used a full curtain treatment with dark earth tones behind viewing area and speakers.

It made a huge, very dramatic difference from the tan walls and white ceilings.

Here I came back to the forum thinking 'wow 10 replies, nice' - unfortunately most of it is you guys rambling silly stuff Mr. Green

Still there are 2 nice suggestions - thanks, I'll run them by the lady Smile

Any more suggestions and/or pictures perhaps?

By the way I couldn't care less what the guests think of the room, it's mostly that I won't get away with an all black room in the house in general Wink

Yes we do tend to ramble. You could do something fancy with upholstered panels. Lite colored on one side dark on the other.

I have posted some photos of my guest bedroom/theater room in the thread on white ceilings - you may want to visit that anyway for some potential solutions to having a white ceiling (As I indicated there I will be putting removable acoustic panels on the ceiling in the space between pj and screen to eliminate some light I get reflected off screen at that location).

My wife likes the dark red finish of the room (but it did take a lot of coats to cover - we did four coats); and to enhance its performance for CRT purposes the trim and ceiling were painted with Behr Silverscreen - which is a light gray paint; much better than white but still no where near as dark as desired for a theater. I have no problems whatsoever with the dark red paint. For daytime viewing; which is occasional and sometimes for things like my sons playing PS3 games; the venetian blinds and the dark blue curtains on the two windows do an adequate job of darkening the room.

My room is somewhat larger (17x13 ft) than the space you indicate (I guestimate 3 meters around 12 feet long). As you can see from photos my pj is about 11 feet from screen - allowing a full 100 inch 4/3 raster which is good on occasion but with geometry takes the top of the screen up to the ceiling. You really need this to avoid having the projected image too close to the beds vertically; plus it was right for the Marquee anyway. When vertically screened for 16:9 the image is sufficiently away from the ceiling but I do recommend masking in any event.

Some mistakes I would avoid and plan to fix soon - a major one was having the A/V equipment on a stand in the room; I should have place it inside the closet. That will require rerunning a lot of wires but what I have just is not appropriate for a nice looking theater room. I would probably set the subwoofer in the center between the two twin beds and allow that to support the center speaker. You may have a problem locating a center speaker with a single bed - I know I could not use headboard at the head of the beds.

I can fit quite a few people into the room for special events; but if my wife were more amenable I would prefer to have a couple rows of real theater seats instead of the low end ones we put in there. But that would make it far less friendly as a guest room.

Edit - I can't figure out how to post pictures - here's a link to the set of them:

Here is a photo of the room - there are others on my this web page that I linked to in the other thread.

Joris, not sure what they are selling up North, but down here they have relatively cheap places like Kwantum Hallen, selling decent black velours blinding curtains, screw some rails onto the ceiling and cover the wall with black velvet that way. When the guests are scheduled to arrive just slide and bunch most of the curtains in front of the windows, that should completely eliminate Sweden's low angle sun blasting through.

Joris, diepe paars varianten, of bruin/grijstonen werken meestal heel goed.

Technically yes, but I'm still the same nice guy (and still a CRT newbie Wink ) Smile

Thanks again for the suggestions! The HT/Guestroom will probably not be the first one to put our hands on, so we can consider the options and take our time. A curtain is cool in it's way. I do plan to have a fixed screen in the room instead of the current electric screen which is both too big and not completely straight.
