I said cassettes RULE! 
That's a nice deck. I agree the store bought cassette's never sounded as good as mine. My friends use to say the same thing when we (GASP!) traded music. Most of my stuff was recorded off of fresh vinyl. I have some vinyl here that maybe has 10 plays on it. 3 of which were for making cassette's.
I use to love the recored liner that said "STOP! Home taping is killing the recording industry" Well here we are over 25 years later and the recording industry is still around. Of course digital has hurt it a bit. See analog IS better.

When you guys are saying "MP3s", are you saying, "MP3s I encoded myself with WinLAME at 256kbit VBR" or, "A 128kbit CBR MP3 of a Limp Bizkit single I downloaded off of napster in 1999 and listened to 10 seconds of"? There's a difference, you know.

Ohh I know. The old MP3's sound worse that the newer encoded ones but none of them sound good to me.
On the other hand I always did like the Cassette MP3 player. Not because it could play sub-par music but just because it was shaped like a 1 7/8 in/sec cassete.
I am such a geek...

To me, my list begins and ends with 1994. Starting with McCartney, then Pink Floyd, Eagles, Led Zepplin and I think Van Halen. Floyd and the Eagles twice. I knew it was a great year and the sad thing was is I knew it would be the acme of concert going. I can still remember those concerts especially Floyd and McCartney. Heck, I had a ticket to see Floyd in Birmingham, but I missed it because the Nascar race stopped traffic for so many hours that by the time I got there the show was over. I was pissed at Nascar fans for a long time after that.

I have tons of cassettes, including a prized one from a local act in New Orleans that never made it big - I would *love* to have a Nakamichi Dragon to listen to them with.... coolest deck ever!

When you have a Dragon you need a full time tech at your disposal to tune it up all the time. I new a local guy that had two of them. Every time I talked to him he was getting something fixed on them.
I agree though. Very cool decks.
I liked the TEAC 8030 too. I couldn't find one when I went looking and ended up with a Sony TCWA9ES. This Sony was the first deck I ever had to read the manual for.
It also has Dolby S noise reduction.

I just got reminded of this:

...THAT, if you ask me, is having a far greater impact on audio quality than *data rate* compression (as opposed to volume compression). No dynamic range = sh*tty output - no matter WHAT equipment you play it on, MP3, WAV, or vinyl.
What brought it to mind was a gushing cnn article about the entire Beatles back catalog being remastered - and in there was this:

I have a Sony ES series dual cassette monster. Got given it. Never used it.
You can download FLAC now (legally). 24 bit FLAC is better than CD. MP3 is bad, FLAC is good.
I will never buy a CD again (or a DVD for that matter). FLAC and Bluray for me.

You hit the hammer on the head with the problem with new music. They over compress it, the like EVERYTHING LOUD!
I wonder if they will re-bastard Genesis- In the Quietest Moments? Oh the irony.

As for cassette decks, a friend in high school dropped $1K on a Nak Dragon when he went (back) to Hong Kong for a visit. I inherited a 3 head Nak a long time ago, new in the box. It was an abandoned bodx at my US shipping depot. Gave them $200 for it.
I had a 1970s Aiwa before that, the one with the dual meter, one needle for RMS, one for peak. The FF/REW clutch got all sticky, but I used that deck for 100s of hours, other than a bit of hiss, it definitely recorded to 18Khz or so.
Hey, I also have an Elcaset here...Hahahahahahahahaha!

We can already envision the flame fest on this one, so we'll just cut to the chase. Jonathan Berger, professor of music at Stanford, has been conducting some pretty interesting tests on incoming students, and he's been recording results that'll surely make audiophiles cringe. He has been asking his students to listen to tracks in MP3 format as well as in formats of much higher quality, all while asking them to select the one they like best; increasingly, youngsters have been choosing the sizzling, tinny sounds of MP3 over more pure representations. The reasoning may have more to do with psychology that audiology, as many conclude that generations simply prefer what they're used to. Ever known someone to swear that vinyl sounds best, pops and all? So yeah, what we've really learned is that MP3 is more of an "acquired taste," but those still attempting to build their SACD collection should be genuinely afraid of the future. |
Who cares about youngsters, unless you think the studios will stop offering higher quality to the niche markets.

Saw Cup practice at Talladega last year - I was there to fix a motion sim we sold to some guys doing promo work for AAA. They managed to spill water into their computers, so they needed one of them reinstalled. Flew to Alabama for 45 minutes of work... 
Anyway, it was pretty boring, to be honest - you're much better off watching on TV where you can tell what's going on, to the extent that anything IS going on.
Hotter than hell, expensive for food, nothing to do, and you can't see the racing happen.
