It's a sad thing:

Survey shows increasing preference for MP3 by youngsters, audiophiles weep
by Darren Murph,
We can already envision the flame fest on this one, so we'll just cut to the chase. Jonathan Berger, professor of music at Stanford, has been conducting some pretty interesting tests on incoming students, and he's been recording results that'll surely make audiophiles cringe. He has been asking his students to listen to tracks in MP3 format as well as in formats of much higher quality, all while asking them to select the one they like best; increasingly, youngsters have been choosing the sizzling, tinny sounds of MP3 over more pure representations. The reasoning may have more to do with psychology that audiology, as many conclude that generations simply prefer what they're used to. Ever known someone to swear that vinyl sounds best, pops and all? So yeah, what we've really learned is that MP3 is more of an "acquired taste," but those still attempting to build their SACD collection should be genuinely afraid of the future.

Ask the average young person if they have EVER heard live music. Most of them havent. So when you start talking about "fidelity, and imaging" and all that good stuff.... they have no clue. Also even if they have been to a live performance, how much of the "live" is actually LIVE. Pre recorded licks, auto tuned voices...
Young folks have no frame of reference to compare mp3 to other non compressed sources.

Eh? LOTS of kiddies go see live music! That's the only way most smaller acts make any money anymore is playing live shows. So, it isn't that kiddies haven't seen or heard live music, it's that the live music they have seen and heard is nothing to write home about, sonically speaking.
Now, ask the kiddies if they've ever heard a classical performance in well-designed hall, or a jazz band in a small venue, or a live vocal performance in a theater, and you'll most certainly get blank stares.
I predicted this years ago when "ripping", the iPod and other MP3 players started to get popular and Apple and everybody else started selling music online. I knew this would happen.

But do you really want to hear 50cent played out of a $50K system?
I believe some of those youth will eventually move over to good audio systems as they get older, taste in music change and they become more knowledgeable. MP3 music is just a gateway into the music world. Some will stay there while others will move on and become more sophicated. Hell my introduction to music was listening to DOA, Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks on my dad's old sony tape player.

Could be a regional difference. Most kids i know have only seen, Britney, or Kanye, or someone of that type. I consider myself fortunate. I live in one of the Concert capitals of the US. In my teens and 20's i saw more bands, and performers. Live, in large and small venues.
Billy Idol, John Cougar, The Police, Sting, Queen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Springsteen (more times than you'd think), Bowie, Tin Machine, The Replacements, Suicidal Tendencies, The Pogues, The Cranberries, Siouxie and the Banshees, Billy Joel, Elton john, YES, Styx, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Men without Hats, Gary Newman, Winger (they got run off the stage ) New Edition, Bobby Brown, Prince, Rick James, Luther Vandross, Grateful Dead, Genesis, Phil Collins, Branford Marsalis, Art Blakey, Sonny rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Guy, the Pretenders, Joe Jackson, bon jovi , Men at Work, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Stray Catz, Eric Clapton, LL Cool J, Peter Gabriel, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, the Roots, EPMD, De la Soul, soundgarden, Tribe Called Quest, Eric B and Rakim, Dead Milkmen, Janet Jackson, Pat Metheney, Blues Traveler, George Michael, The Fugees,
and probably some im forgetting, All before i turned 30!!!
And i havent even mentioned the Philadelphia Orchestra, a marvelous group and a wonderful facility...
So i still think most mp3 lovers dont have a clue what real LIVE music sounds like!

I grew up on cassettes. I finally ended up with a Nak 3 head unit about 10 years ago, but I was taping off AM (!) in elementary school like everyone else. IN high school I bought an Akai RTR which I still have, and still have probably 100 tapes that I recorded back then, including a messload of hte bands that Em mentions above.
I'd say though that despite how bad MP3 is quality wise, it's still better than the analog cassettes I was listening to back in the 70s and 80s.
AS for live bands, I saw more in the 90s than in the 80s as a teenager, mainly because I had more disposable income in the 90s when I was in my 30s.

In or around 1987 I was friends with a guy who's cousin was a manager with Spectaguard. They did all the security for the stadiums and venues in the area. So the guy asked me which i preferred to work Concerts or Sports, i said concerts.
It was cool you saw a lot of good shows, you also got stuck working Disney on ice, and the circus, and 4 nights in a row of Neil Diamond

Wow, John - That's an impressive lineup of acts you've seen. I've seen quite a few in my day too, but not nearly the roster of biggies you've collected. There's no way I can remember them all right now, but these are a few of the acts I've seen: Genesis, U2, Judybats, The Tubes, Freddy Jones Band, Deep Blue Something, .38 Special, Night Ranger, Dave Matthews Band, Rolling Stones, Sting, Beach Boys, Glass Tiger, AC/DC, Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, David Sanborn, BB King, Mannheim Steamroller, Motley Crue, Kiss, Winger, Slaughter, Great White, Pearl Jam, REM...
I think I still have the Ticketmaster stubs for every single show I've ever been to!
Oh, and my wife and I have tickets to see Depeche Mode at Red Rocks in Denver.
Your "before I was 30" comment is funny... Most of the great shows I saw were before I was 30, too. Since then (I'm 39), I've only seen a handful, and most of those were shows that were part of a larger event I attended... i.e. I didn't specifically go just to see the show.

My wife is giddy with excitement. It's her all-time favorite band... big time. And to see it in "God's amphitheater"... I've heard seeing a good show at Red Rocks is a religious experience, so I have pretty high expectations... Gonna try to get a good camera in, so we'll see - we're in the 8th row.

My kids LOVE dancing to Round and Round in the living room!!!
Thanks, YouTube!!!
At least MY kids will know the difference between sh*tty compressed audio and high-quality audio. Now, kids... Here's sh*tty compressed audio.... (plays YouTube video)... Now, here's high quality audio (fires up Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds with TrueHD 96/24 track)...

About the only good thing about all this technology is that 'youngsters' are being exposed to 'real' (good?) music of the 60-80s. I'll still take a 1 hit wonder band over a whole lot of the crap played on the radio today.
Per example:

I wouldn't bet on it. So many of these kids have had too-loud music piped right into their ears for tens of thousands of hours. By the time they develop some taste, they won't be able to HEAR the difference between MP3 and real audio.

Aha, so you're coming to Colorado in August, eh? You ARE planning to stop by, yes??
Red Rocks is a fabulous place to see concerts, if the weather cooperates. I saw Phish there and, um, at least one or two others...
I haven't seen a LOT of concerts, but I've seen some good ones: Pink Floyd, the Who, Yes, Frank Zappa, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny (4x), Styx, Starcastle (couldn't hear right for 3 days ), Moody Blues, Elton John, John Denver. ( , it was 30+ yrs ago...)
Haven't been to many in the last 20 years because my ears just can't stand the volume. It *hurts*. I'm better off to buy a CD.

Yeah, we're hoping to get up your way, Gary. We'd like to check out the area for future relocation plans. We've spent weeks in Denver, but I've never been up your way, before! It would be fun to swing by and say hello if the timing worked. Be forewarned... We'd probably have the mini-me's with us.
I saw The Who, too!!! Summer 1989 in Arrowhead Stadium in KC MO! Awesome show!
I haven't been to many in recent years, either... Mostly because it costs so damn much money! Depeche Mode tickets were almost $250 for the pair! My buddy and I were lamenting how expensive tickets are these days, and recalled so many of our concert tickets in the late 80's and early 90's were $32.50, $37.50, etc. Now, $110 is standard fare, plus the all fees. Are we not remember correctly, or are concert tickets a LOT more expensive than they were 20 years ago? I mean, even accounting for inflation, of course.

If 'audiophiles' had any credibility left after their credulous consumption of everything from plastic "make your CD better" chips to $1500 line cords, they might be able to use it to help convince people that there really is a difference between good quality and 64kbit satellite radio.
As it is, however... with friends like these...

Really? I use to record too much stuff off of FM radio. My 80's cassette colection BLOWS MP3's away! When Napster was still fresh and new and most stuff was out in 128-160k MP3 I did A/B comparisons. I hated the sound of MP3's! Cassette's rule!
BTW anyone know where I can get yet another 1994 Boniville AM/FM/Cassette deck? I've worn out 2 now in my truck
Back in 2005 I rented a Chrysler 300C, it had a casstette deck! I was floored! I opened all 4 windows, opened the sunroof all the way, grabbed '*** on Feel the Noize' by Quiet Riot and just cranked it! That combined with HEMI power, well let's say it made me VERY happy in the pants!

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "cassettes rule", but they definitely rocked for a long time. The funny thing is how much better my home-made cassettes sounded than the factory crap. I bought vinyl (and later CD's), and recorded them on really good Sony and Maxell metal tapes on a Harmon Kardon CD 491... Those tapes sounded AWESOME. They just SMOKED a factory-recorded cassette.
Look at this bad boy... What a beautiful piece of equipment. The old man still has it. Man, it's almost 25 years old!!!! I'm getting old.
