just recieved the HDfury2, switched over from my dwin transcanner. Wow what a difference it was worth the investment. Now here is my question Iam currently using a Toshiba dvd recorder/player with upconverting to 1080i for watching . I have my satelite feed also running thru the dvd via s video, than to the fury via hdmi from the dvd player does this also up convert my sat signal ? and finally would a blu ray be the best way to go for my set up sorry i guess i should mention that the projector is a Sony 1271Q. Thanks your feed back is appreciated.

Run, don't walk to get a Blu-ray player. Even on a lowly 1271 (my last projector), the difference between DVD and BD is huge - especially if it's a nice 1271 and set up well. 1080i is the real sweet spot on the 1271. Do it.
A word of caution. Once you get a taste of HD, you will never be able to enjoy an SD DVD the way you once did.

Yeah, I have been avoiding BR for some time now. I get almost all my DVD's at yard sales, costing me a buck or two. Going to BR would cost me a fortune in disc's.

Deron, Netflix is $9, $14, and $17/mo for 1, 2 and 3 discs out at a time. I don't know how often you watch movies, but I can barely keep up with 2-at-a-time. It costs me basically $168/year, and I can (and do) watch dozens and dozens of Blu-rays, and be watching the very BEST picture I can watch in my home theater.

I hit the pawn shops for bluray. While not at the $1-2 mark yet they are considerably cheaper than retail.
I got Resident Evil 3 disk box set for $32 sealed! Apparently someone traded in their whole collection for cash and couldn't make the payments!. Guess there are more people than just us that buy movies to watch and don't get around to them for whatever reason.
I had DVD upscalling at 1080i on my 1252 when I had it all tweaked out. It looked nice. Then I switched over to an HD feed from CBC LOTR WOW what a difference. Do it. You can usually find a decent Bluray player on Craigs List for not too much cash. Just make sure it's one that can be updated and make sure it has the audio features you require.
Of course there's no warranty but personally I don't mind taking the chance. I just call things pre tested. I also insist on getting a demo before buying ( I know, just common sense )

I got a buddy from out of town that regularly picks up BD's from a local Mr. Money pawn/payday loan shop. He typically pays $8-10 for used, nice condition Blu-rays. I've been the benefactor of his deals a few times. I wish I could do the same, but there's no shop like that anywhere near where I live.

Yeah that always sucks. I use to take living in the city for granted. Then I started visiting other smaller places.
I remember looking for gas one nite after 8pm on I 89. I must have gone to 15 towns before I found a station that was open.
Same thing with used stuff. Smaller population less deals to be had.

I too would say to run out and get a bluray player. I have a 1251q and love my bluray player (and HD DVD player). It is such a major improvement over sd dvd. You will be glad you made the change!
Also, if you don't have one yet, get some type of gamma boost (GammaX, Box1040, or Kim's Transcoder). This made a major improvement to PQ, just about as big of a differences as going from sd to hd. Detail that was once hidden is now clearly visible. Another must have for CRT projectors.

I would second the suggestion to run, not walk. Huge difference. Even on a 1271.
I would also second the word of caution. I've watched maybe 1 or 2 DVDs in the last 2 years and 100+ Blu-ray's.

If you're getting DVDs for $1-2 then yes, it probably would. Though you can buy used Blu-ray's too (Blockbuster, etc). A bicycle is also cheaper than a car. All depends on the performance you're expecting.

Same here, but not quite as DVD-only. With a few exceptions, we've watched only a handful of DVD's, and the were mostly Pixar movies we watched with the kids that aren't out on BD, yet.
Man, we watched Sleeping Beauty on BD a month or so ago... Holy sh*t, that's a beautiful release. Absolutely gorgeous. I was just blown away at how amazing it looked for being FIFTY years old!
It's just silly to be into home theater and into watching movies and not have Blu-ray. The viewing experience is just SO superior. You simply see things you wouldn't otherwise. Texture in clothing and fabrics, people in the distance, tiny lights or trees on the skyline, stars, film grain... The audio is stellar, too of course.

The best Blu-Ray player for our purposes is arguably the Samsung BD-P2550... Its' got 7.1 analog out to help avoid replacing your HTR, and has Realta HQV scaling for SD DVD. I've got one and like it a lot.
