If that is Jeff Smith, then he was the first one to do a DIY Torus screen. I believe he was running the much sought after Stewart high gain screen. As for the softness, I can't say without seeing it. You would need to throw up some patterns to see if there are any issues. That being said, CRTs are never going to look as sharp as a DLP. On the brightness issue, I would be curious what his ft/lms are? You have to remember that even with a Torus screen, it is still a large screen. His screen is 9216 sq/in which would give the same ft/lmbs as a 1 gain screen of around 90" wide. If you really want CRT and high ft/lmbs, then a smaller Torus screen is your best bet.

Small world. I had a feeling he would be known here. He seems like a nice guy who wants a fair price? The brightness issue is a tricky one though, as I said I am comparing it to my Rptv wich is also a CRT.

Does anyone know what size CRT's are in the Mitsubishi WS-65315 built 2003? This is the year before HDMI so it is DVI input.

7" tubes. There was only one set by Mits that had 9" tubes. Even that one couldn't resolve 1920x1080. A review stated that their NEC or Barco FP CRT was better than the best Mits. Your RPTV is bright because your screen has gain and is much smaller than his. Your screen is around 1900sq/in compared to 9200 sq/in.

Sounds logical. I will be using a 100' diagonal 16x9 screen with 1.3 gain. Let the shopping continue.

Thanks Spanky Ham.

Man, none of those things look very sharp! Here I thought digitals were supposed to have good resolution... Rolling Eyes

Laughing I don't think I would make a purchase decision based on the videos.

I agree a purchase based solely on the videos isn't all you should do. Now if only I could find a store that actually had some P/Js set up that would help.

After all, the CRT'S are sight unseen too, with only screen shots of stills no motion at all.

What to do? What to do? Sad

If you want to drive tho the Phila area there are a few ht shops i the area.

Overture. http://www.overtureav.com/hometheater/?gclid=CPmP6baKqJkCFQwDGgodBh9wpg
They are in Wilmington and Lewes De.

Bob and Rons Worldwide Stereo.
http://www.wwstereo.com/
They are in Ardmore, PA and Montgomeryville. Ardmore is closer and has nicer setups. (It's what used to be my old shop)

Hi FI Sales, Cherry Hill NJ http://www.hifisales.com/

Not as good as the other 2 but still a couple of decent setups.

Thanks emdawgz.
I was at overture last week. I have bought things from them in the past , good guys there. They are going to be selling EPSON projectors in a week or two. They are working on the 7500UB to be installed in one of their showrooms. It is out off my price range though. But I'm still going to look at it. I have never been to Ron & Bob's I have heard of them and Hi -fi house.

The screen will be here tomorrow. I will be buying something in short order. I just don't know what.

Thanks again to everyone here for all the great help. Thumbs Up

You might want to check out the Pioneer RS2 clone that is getting blown out for less than 3k. It is a higher end LCOS set and I have been fairly impressed with the RS2. If CRTs were to disappear today or my Barcos were to explode on me that is probably what I would get. It is certainly sharper than my Runco 1100/1209s but I still perfer the image overall of my Runco but it is the closest digital I have seen to CRT not that I have seen that many mind you. On the sharpness issue honestly I have always found the non-high res tubes to be a bit soft. The PTs18s/p16s for 8" sets and PT22/P19LUGs/LPBs in the 9" sets have alway been noticably sharper to my eyes. The P16s were a incredible upgrade on my Data 808s. I haven't fully setup or dailed in my Runco 1100 yet but my new green is sitting in DC waiting for me to go up there whoo hoo! But it is plent sharp for me on my HTPC desktop nevermind video. If you are a sharpness nut you might want to look at sets with the higher res tubes. I don't know maybe this set you looked at had these. That ad mentions the green being replaced. I don't think Marquees of that era came with high res tubes standard.

Did you get a reply from that member to see their setup?

I think if you can spend $2500 on a nice CRT, you'll be impressed. Emdawgz1 isn't your PJ setup? I think he'd be impressed by an NEC. Great sharpness and colour.

If you like the sharpnenss of a digital you can always turn off the blue defocus, which will make it a bit sharper, but it will lose some of the film like qualities. I'm considering turning mine off for a while.

Mr Green, Yes I did receive a reply from the club member. We are talking about next week. I have been staying firm on $2000.00 as top dollar .The Sanyo I linked to was $2195 after rebate, and has now come down to $1995 free shipping.

Spanky Ham, the virginia crowd and Phila are all 130 miles from me in opposite directions. I am on a peninsula everything good is 75 miles minimum from me. So I am used to driving.

I think I insulted Mike Parker by not liking Jeffs set up wich he moded.I wasn't trying to. I think will pm him and se if i can see his set up . It sure can't hurt. Cool

Honestly I would go see Clarence's G90 he is out by Dulles airport in the Virginia suburbs of DC. His G90 has been professionally setup and the G90 is widely considered in the top tier of CRTs (I personally wouldn't buy one because of the chip issue) but if you don't like his setup then CRTs are probably not for you and you can move on. The G90s come with the higher resolution tubes . Just PM Clarence on this site (that is is screename here). The problem with Mike is if he is like the reseller I know he never really has a projector setup in a theater like environment. They are always upgrading/swapping and the like. I think you would be best seeing a projector that is setup and being used in a home theater environment and not just dialed in quick for a demonstration. I am in central VA but it will probably be 3+ weeks before I have my Runco/Barco 9" set with hi resolution tubes setup. I need to install my new green CRT and run it in.

For 2k maximum you will need to be patient if you are looking for a 9" set. It is certainly not impossible to get a 9" set for that, but good deals in that price range are not that common.

Thank's again Secstate. It is Clarence's G-90 I am going to see next week. I have the same thought if the G-90 isn't to my liking then nothing will be. Or it will poison me for ever and I will need to be less cheap? or a lot more patient Wink ugghh ahh shivers. Rolling Eyes
