I've been reading about different setups with projectors. It seems that most of the Digital crowd goes with a CIH setup. For obvious reasons this isn't really optimum for CRT's. Two reasons being that 1. Less phospher use, and 2. Brightness.
I did come across another method, Constant Image Area. Bjoern something or other has a webpage dedicated to this method, but doesn't really explain how it's done. He does have a 4-way masking system, but I don't see how it's accomplished to get the width to be less on 16:9 or 4:3 material as opposed to 2.35:1. The screen is as wide as 2.35:1, but the image shrinks in width but grows in height with other than scope stuff.
I should mention that he has a HTPC and a nec xg projector.

Mein got in himmel, the last thing we need is another axis on this debate! Flee! Flee for your LIVES!!!
It's kind of a neat idea, and it probably looks really cool if you do some nice profiled servo moves for the masking, but if I was going to do a mask system I'd probably just stick with CIW as things stand.

I am sitting here trying to figure it out myself and cant figure out how to do this with out having the area change. The best for CRT where you keep the maximum phosphor width use but not vertically is CIW. Use a 16x9 or a 4x3 screen and you can keep the same width for each aspect and then mask the top and bottom for 1.78 and 2.35. if using a 16x9 screen and do watch 1.33 material then you dont have a true CIW as you lose the width on the sides.
I have used CIW for the most part and am going to CIH for the Blend

This way makes the most sense too.
I don't see the point of having a teeny tiny 4:3 image inside the 16:9 image or worse yet inside a 2.35:1 area. I want to use my whole damned tube face ( or as much as I can ) for 4:3. In my setup that makes 4:3, 10 feet wide and 8 feet high.
If I were to watch 4:3 insdie a 2.35:1 area I might as well break out the 27" TV.
