seems that the fan in front of the convergence tray is pretty far from the main chips...and it's fairly loud. I'm thinking 4 smaller fans pointed right at the chips/heatsinks...and running them at a low voltage. Or maybe 2 or 3 larger fans angled down (so they fit in the tray) toward the chips, but also inside the tray, not at the outside of the projector. The projector is currently naked...
Any thoughts? Should provide better cooling AND less noise.

The conv stk's are they only ones that get hot - they have openings thru the tray,
but the openings don't go anywhere. The front conv tray fan is mounted such that
the air it moves just recirculates around the sides on the fan - useless.
If you cut the bottom cover (easy to remove) in two places directly over
the conv stk's, you can mount two small fans there, and if you make
some baffles for the front fan, you can replace it with a much quieter
model. I use the pansonic 80mmx10mm 0.12A fans with good results.
The measured fan voltage stays at 7.x volts, it is controlled by a regulator
which gets feedback form a thermistor on the conv board near the stk's
Maybe I will finish some pictures later tonight...

Would be interested to see those pics.
I never knew that the front fan was disconnected when I bought it. Also, never noticed an issue....but I would only watch for an hour and a half to 2 hours tops...
Anyhow, the pj is on the ceiling now and that front fan is connected and is really loud and annoying. I think I can live with the rear ones though (after slight mod).
I can tell that the convergence tray fan was an afterthought at best...I'm definitely thinking multiple fans running very slow and quiet would provide rock solid convergence and quiet operation. Just need to noodle with the best method(s) to do it.

Maybe a good idea, but the looks aren't that good.

I didn't create a barkenstein monster, so no need for hiding my barco.

What I did was take out the small fan and replace it with a 120mm fan mounted on an angle, kinda like laying down due to the limited height. Also I cut out the grid cross pattern on the front panel to allow more air flow. This gave much better coolong and alot quieter operation. I think it would hard to mount fans next to the chips because of the limited height as it tapers down inside as it gets to the heatsinks. Also using small fans is going to create more noise as they tend to be very noisy for the amount of air they move.
