lenses

Yep, it's the damned lenses. I put up a 1080p48 test pattern - smudge city on screen; tarp as a shack in the tube. Grrr! Confused

So, looks like I gotta save my pennies. For the moment, I've played around, and it looks like the best these lenses will resolve cleanly is 1440x900. Sad

Hmmm... Interesting. More data that supports my own findings that the HD-8's (at least the plastic Rev B variety) and the PT-whatevers that came on so many machines... suck for HD.

Don't forget that while it may look sharp as a tack in the tube, some of that is because it's so damn small... Even if you could enlarge it to 15x the size with perfect theoretical optical performance, it wouldn't be as sharp as it seems. That said, if you can see scan lines or other details looking at the tubes, but you can't see those same things on-screen, it can only be the lens.

I'm going to look at the lens data thread later today to see if I can find anything interesting.

Oh, it's the lenses all right - I can see the 1-on-1-off lines in the tubes; stark, like jail bars. On screen it's just a solid color.

Yepp just use a magnifying glass when you have lens's off to magnify it, easy to see how well the tubes can resolve but the lens cant, this is why the ultra expensive HFQ900's are so sought after by the 9inch guys, its one reason the G90 is so sharp(HD10F are said to be the sam as HFQ900's).

I read that the HD 10f on the G90 is not the same as some of the ones on the sony 1292, is this true? Also are they really the same lenses as the HFQs>? Mike Parker said these were superb lenses and also the reason why the G90 is that much sharper along with the 909 than pjs with other lenses. Apparently the HDIH-2000J had great Nikon lenses that were motorized anyone ever tried these out?

They are the same. The later the revision the better quality the lens it seems , I think it holds true for a few other models of lens as well . The early 10f lenses do not quite look as clear as the later ones, I think one main reason is the AR coating, VERY SUBTLE difference though . I have noticed this on a few other lens as well. I was talking with Galen about this awhile ago and he mentioned he has observed this as well on few lenses .

As a test on a 9500 I put on two of the same model lenses but one was from a machine that was six years older and it was a noticeable difference in the clarity.

It looks Us Precision have been upgrading and advancing Crt lenses until very recently , They actually filed for CRT lens patents as late as 2003 .

I still stand by my Best/Worst list here: http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm...

The only 9" machines that (IMHO) are BETTER than those high end 8" LC machines (which include the NEC XG LC) are:

Marquee 9500LC (though in stock form it's not that impressive)
Marquee 9500LC Ultra

Kal

I have a question on the 9500LC ranking here. Many have posted here that the Ultra modifications for the Marquee are not necessary unless you plan to blend. Kal seems to have a distinct preference for the Ultra, however.

Comments?

You don't need an Ultra to blend. Tim has his blend with standard 9500's.

It depends on what year ultras. the newer 2003 and up have better bandwidth and overall scan rate abilities than the older Ultras. For blending Ultras wont matter but if you want to do a side by side stack then you need the extra geometry functions they offer.

One thing I noticed about the list is the delination lines in each category. Maybe if Kal did away with those lines and just left it at three categories, it would be better. Also, why doesn't anyone complain about the other end of the list? There has to be some ECP lovers out there somewhere.Smile
