...Of course the beaches are unspoiled - most of the residents can't afford recreation because they're all under the thumb of a communist dictator. I'm sure Cuba is great as a tourist destination though - I imagine food and lodging is probably stupid cheap.

Hey, Walter - Maybe you're not aware of this, but there is no national news outlet, here. We're free to broadcast and publish whatever we like, here. Really! Get this: People have actually traveled to Cuba, shot video, written stories, and published it. Pssssstt... Some of us have even seen those things. You might also be surprised to learn that our internet is connected to to the World Wide Web, and we can read stories from all over the globe.
As John already pointed out, while it is technically against the law for US citizens to travel to Cuba, people do it all the time. Writers, documentarians, surfers, leisure travelers, and others do it all the time.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you don't know a damn bit more about Cuba than I do either, Walter.

I am not going out on a limb and guessing know very little about Cuba

Did you know You can walk in to any dentist and get free work done, Hospitals the same.
You can also go to university FREE and it doesn't have to be on a basket weaving scholarship because you are seven feet tall .

You can travel there but are not allowed to buy anything there as an American, if you have receipts you can get charged with trading with the enemy .
Ecrabb here learn some more about Cuba and your country.

Ecrabb do you know what trade embargo means ?
They do pretty good for their OWN CITIZENS for such a small tax based embargoed country with an evil leader.. EH SC.
Maybe you should put an embargo on China, I think they are commie "evildoers" as well.
Most Cuban people are wonderfully friendly and very hospitable and would give you the shirt off their back ..Just like a lot of Us Americans are . Most Canadian Americans enjoy visiting both Countries.
Spanky only the bad ones come to Miami
IT will be ruined soon though

US law currently allows business executives “who wish to identify commercial opportunities” in Cuba to visit the island. In the year 2000, over 3,400 American corporate executives traveled to Cuba “on business.” While State Department loopholes allow large corporations and investors to position themselves in the Cuban market, however, small-scale American entrepreneurs are still barred from business dealing with Cuba

Pretty soon it will be hard to tell if you are in Miami or Cuba.. EH Spanky ..

Did I say I was an expert or that I know a great deal? I only know what I've seen and read over the years, and I was only responding to Walter's implication that somehow I can't know anything true about Cuba because of some implied government propaganda effort - which is ridiculous at this point.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | SC How many of those shows do you watch or books do you read ? |
I haven't exactly made Cuba or US-Cuban politics a major course of my studies. I assume you haven't, either. So, what? Have I somehow represented myself as any kind of expert? I'll answer for you: No, I haven't.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | Did you know You can walk in to any dentist and get free work done, Hospitals the same. |
Yes, I've read that. I've also seen video and images from Cuban hospitals with open windows, flies, and filth. If that's your idea of great free health care, I don't want it.
From what I've read, if you're one the 10% of Cubans with some money, you can get pretty good healthcare. If you're one of the other 90%, you're stuck with the free substandard healthcare that none of us here would want unless we had no other choice.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | You can also go to university FREE and it doesn't have to be on a basket weaving scholarship because you are seven feet tall . |
Ah, yes - the old "free" word... as if SOMEBODY doesn't have to pay for this stuff. I'm sure it's excellent, too. World-class, I'm sure.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | You can travel there but are not allowed to buy anything there as an American, if you have receipts you can get charged with trading with the enemy . |
Yeah, and if you fail to report your income taxes, you can be charged with income tax evasion. So? I said as much.
I checked it out. Wasn't much I didn't know already. I especially enjoyed the agenda-based political commentary (complete with misspellings) by what seems to be a California-based "travel agency" (AKA, a person working out of their bedroom). Wow. There's an objective source with plenty of impartiality and credibility.

Oh, that's hilarious. Just hilarious. Well, if our "dictators" are communist, then I'm surprised you don't LOVE them given most of your political positions!!!
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | Ecrabb do you know what trade embargo means ? |
Yeah, I do. But, according to left-wingers like you, the United States is hated and reviled by the rest of the world, so Castro should be able to find plenty of trading partners if he actually gave a sh*t about his people.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | They do pretty good for their OWN CITIZENS for such a small tax based embargoed country with an evil leader.. EH SC. |
Pretty well, you mean? Yes, they do seem to do pretty well for living under a self-described Markist-Leninist for what, almost half a decade? By the sounds of it, you probably admire him. Now, they've moved on to his brother. Great. I'm sure things will be looking up for the Cuban people, soon. NOT!
| Bruce 09 wrote: | Maybe you should put an embargo on China, I think they are commie "evildoers" as well. |
I don't know about an embargo, but I'd love to talk about balancing the trade better. The trade imbalance the United States has with China is ridiculous. It should have been addressed long ago, but none of our politicians have the balls or political willpower with which to address the situation.
| Bruce 09 wrote: | | Most Cuban people are wonderfully friendly and very hospitable and would give you the shirt off their back ..Just like a lot of Us Americans are . Most Canadian Americans enjoy visiting both Countries. |
Of course, they're nice. Most human beings, regardless of ethnicity or nationality are nice. All the more reason that it sucks they have to live under Castro. Hopefully, he'll hurry up and die, have a REAL election, and elect somebody that can work FOR the people, we can lift the embargo, and everybody can be happy.

Wow, so everybody is damned if they do and damned if they don't. It's horrible that they're under the evil embargo and can't trade with the US, but it's also "ruined" of American businesses are allowed to expand there.
Does ANYTHING make you happy? Is it POSSIBLE for anything to satisfy you?

YES I am always happy and almost nothing makes me too mad for too long , Pretty liberal you know , You sound like you are spun a little tight though, What makes you Happy? ....LOL

It is not only me that thinks the embargo is silly NOW .
So do these guys agree it is time to end it , recognize them?

DO NOT
The 1963 U.S. embargo was reinforced in October 1992 by the Cuban Democracy Act (the "Torricelli Law") and in 1996 by the Cuban Liberty and Democracy Solidarity Act (known as the Helms-Burton Act) which penalises foreign companies that do business in Cuba by preventing them from doing business in the US. The justification provided for these restrictions was that these companies were trafficking in stolen U.S. properties, and should, thus, be excluded from the United States.
The European Union resents the Helms Burton Act because it felt that the US was dictating how other nations ought to conduct their trade and challenged it on that basis. The EU eventually dropped its challenge in favor of negotiating a solution.
I guess I am a cross between a Liberal and a Commi.
Do you defend all things American? Do you have the ability to stand back and take a look at something and think we can change it or improve it or somehow? Do you ever try to take a look at someone else`s point of view and try to understand WHY they might see it differently ? Maybe Understanding someone's perspective is more important when you a Liberal Commie
Lighten UP ! it is winter time, go to Cuba, I hear it is cheap , smoke a big fat cigar on a beach and enjoy the freedom of being an American.
Bruce
PS
I think your foreign policies have more to do with world popular opinion, not me, I love your country.
Hey Religion is fun to discuss as well with someone with a complete opposite perspective than you do . What side do you think Jesus would be on, Palestinians or Israels ?

Hi ecrabb,
I'm not saying I know alot about Cuba's health care system from the grass roots info stream, but I was born there and I have been before.
I was still under the understanding that US citizens weren't allowed to go, I guess that has changed. And yes I am aware that you guys have the WWW, but on the other hand I'm not sure I would beleive anything that came from your media as it's censored by your gov when it comes to Cuba and if you don't think Uncle Sam has his finger on that pulse then maybe you've been sleeping under a rock for too long.

Have you ever heard of David Suzuki Mark?
|
Umm, is that a trick question?
I spent one half of my childhood watching David Attenborough doco's, and the other half watching David Suzuki doco's
I even have a cool Psytrance track with samples from his series on Drugs.
