Bah... ok, kmplayer is definitely dropping tons of frames. Some smooth pans from the intro to wall-e make it really obvious - glassy smooth with powerdvd; chunky as hell with kmplayer.
So I'm back to square one. Seems like it might be time to throw in the towel and go nVidia, and give up on powerstrip timings. Have people made 48hz or 96i work at 1080p with nV cards? Or do I get to pick between evils?

In my experience, interlaced custom resolutions simply don't work on Nvidia, but I've had NO PROBLEM doing virtually any progressive resolution I wanted...
Hate to say it about the BD playback, but there is NO solution that works for everything we crt enthusiasts want, presently. The best option *most of the time* is TMT, imho. PowerDVD is terrible, and they're actively working on crippling it MORE than they are working on making it WORK...
What we really need is a one button "rip to MKV" which retains main movie and choice of soundtrack with any forced subs, like an additional option in AnyDVD HD...
PS: Any advice on how to make a small dual core setup work more efficiently on HD video ? I've got a nice tiny Dell laptop which has a dual core cpu, and I've tried some MPEG2 HD on it. I can't get it smooth, despite it only using 65% cpu...

What's the best version of Power DVD to run then? I'm using an old version from way back.

There isn't really a "best" version, if you want to play a recent movie, you'll be forced to "upgrade" in order to get the newest keys. Personally, if you want to have the fewest hassles and the most options for playback (ie. from folder) you should stick to 7.3.3319a as long as possible...

OK - partial success. I've got stuff playing smoothly - in KMPlayer, I had to disable its internal codec so ffdshow would get used, and - this was the key - in ffdshow's codec options, set the codec to use 4 threads. Poof - smoooooothness.
For some reason, KMPlayer doesn't have the option to do multithreading in the codec, even though it has options for it and uses the same one.
So, that gives me everything but playback with the bluray menu structure - gamma and other post-proc via ffdshow, smooth playback, and playback straight off the disc without re-containering (?!) to mkv. I've also got a slight issue with any player using ffdshow going down in flames if I skip around within the video - I'm hoping that a new version of ffdshow will fix that. Not a big deal if everything works right, but if the power goes out and back on 75% of the way through a movie, it could be a real pain in the ass... 
Not sure if this setup will let me do uncompressed audio, since I'm still using AC3Filter. Not sure I care, but I'll give it a try with SD DVD and BD of Wall-E when I figure out how.

Which version of ffdshow are you using?
And what option for 4 thread? Where in codecs?
I'm using ffdshow tryouts from about 2 weeks ago.

Mine's probably from November or so - the last time I was playing with Avisynth. I can't remember exactly where the codec option was, but it was 'at the bottom of the list' in ffdshow's config.
