As I remember, someone has the molds but had no luck using them to make new covers.
I'd like to give it a shot. I have always wanted to try to clear gelcoat over black carbon fiber cloth to make a cover set. I think that would look way cool.

Carbon fiber moulding requires different steps than fiberglass. It would definitly look cool though.

I have 5 sick days, 2 weeks vacation and a couple of bonus days to use or lose. I can get real creative if I have everything in front of me. The variable mask screen project will be complete in only a couple of days from start to finish.
I've worked it out in two control versions. Serial control for full automation and manual via a potentiometer to adjust from where ever you wish to mount a wired controller.

Instead of a pot, how about a rotary switch and a network of fixed resistors, with pots to tune each position?

I'm not building these to sell. In fact, I only plan on building two. One for my self and one for Heywood. The only reason that I came up with two different control versions is because I was originally going to cheap out but then decided I wanted to automate it via Crestron. Anyone can DIY a screen. This is more of a add on to a DIY screen. Right now my design is limited to top and bottom masking and to a maximum of a 8 foot wide screen. My screen will be controlled through RS232 with commands sent from my Crestron system.

Are you going to publish the schematics for the masking system? I'd be interested in checking it out.
Don't forget to post the Crestron module on the Yahoo! group

The manual controller is a done deal. I already have it. Besides, you'll want it in serial format as you have the Crestron equipment to drive it.

For a coloured gel coat or paint grade finish you can lay up like a traditional boat mold: for carbon fibre with a clear you really need to vacuum bag the work to get a high quality air free lamination. The material cost for that layup would be at least 4x more than fiberglass, but they would look VERY cool.

I bought them and shipped them to Derfla for him to attempt to get something useful out of them.
The ball is in his court. If he isn't pursuing it anymore, oh well. It was worth the gamble. I stopped worrying about
it or even caring, a long time ago. Cool idea, but not very workable.
Evidently, the amount of labor involved in turning a molded set of covers into a fully fitted and finished cover set
was...considerable. About 40 labor hours per set.

If anyone has the contact info for derfla, I'd like to borrow the molds and give it a shot. I have the vacuum equipment to do the job. If I can locate the molds, I'll build a work station to make a whole set in one session. That's probably the cheapest way to do it as there is less waste.

I have been talking to Derfla about doing the same thing! He is tied up with some other obligations right now but has said I can get the molds. I will post when they arrive and I can see some of the problems Derfla has told me about.

Cool, maybe you can come up with a work around and make a better version.

Well the further away the molds get from me, the less chance I'll ever see them especially in time for my vacation. My best chance now is to con Heywood out of his parts pig when he's done stripping it out and start from scratch with my own design. That would be more fun anyway.
