01.19.2009 — Kwon Young-soo, chief executive of LG Display, is saying the LCD market has hit rock bottom and that prices will recover in the coming months.
The South-Korea based company, the second-largest LCD maker, suffered its worst quarterly loss ever in Q4 2008, spurred by a $400 million fine for price-fixing.
Kwon says "high-end mobile display" will be the company's new focus, investing 577 billion won ($427 million) to build a production line designed to produce "premium LCD screens for mobile devices."
"The good news is that we've reached a bottom. TV panel prices will likely stop the downward trend and recover," Kwon recently said at a press conference, adding that demand is healthy for low-priced, small-size LCDs.
Prices have been dropping for quite some time, and DisplaySearch predicts revenue for LCDs will fall for the first time ever because of falling prices and fewer shipments.
So this begs the question: have LCD prices hit rock bottom? Will they recover (increase) like Kwon believes or is this just wishful thinking?
Let us know what you think.

I did notice that following the judgment on LG, Samsung, and Sharp in the panel price-fixing incident they tried to compete in the retail market against the Vizio's of the world. LG seemed to be the most aggressive, but this is silly when their competitors are using LG OEM components.
But now haven compared LCD to plasma in my home I'm liking plasma much more. Still, I'd never have either in a theater setting.
