Pioneer announced that they are [finally] stopping production on their laser disc player.

I honestly didn't know they were still making them.

In other news, Sony stopped making Beta machines sometime in the early 90s. Very Happy

Great line from the blurb: "Pioneer ... has announced they'll discontinue all three of the models they currently offer, leaving dozens of hardcore fans in the dust." LOL

Actually, I recently read an article about Betamax... It that referenced a press release from 2002, when Sony would announced it would finally cease production of its last to Betamax machines. 2002!!! Apparently, they were only sold in Japan, but I had no idea Sony was still building Beta machines past the late 80's or early 90's, let alone 2002!!!

I have two, the DVL909 and the Elite DVL92. Both are dual format players. Like My BH100 and BH200, I guess i love dual format stuff.
Actually the Sound from a laser disc player is very nice to hear, i should say pleasant to the ear. the sound from Star Wars THX laser Disc is way better than the DVD, Same with Outbreak compared to the Blu Ray version...Yes to me its better!!!
Aslo Pioneer had High Def laser disc called the MUSE system or Hi Scan. those player sell for 2000 at least.

until blu-ray, the DTS soundtracks on LD had a higher (ie: full) bitrate over those on dvd - and yeah, the chopper chase in outbreak is a very nice surround listen, and the dialogue is crisp and clear over the center.

i was going through my blu-ray setup the other day (firmware upgrade zapped all the settings Sad ) and "rediscovered" a setting to dull down the surrounds to make the center channel dialogue more clear. hmph - are the mixes that bad, or are people just unable to setup their speakers correctly?

hmph

oh, i have about 75 laserdiscs. quite a number are DTS and/or versions that were only put out on LD. such as "The Shadow" - on dvd you can have it widescreen or with DTS, but not both Smile

of course Blu-Ray has caught up a lot of those holes. although i think that "George of the Jungle" is still P&S only on dvd. great movie.

unfortunately the only listing i have is on lddb.com, user "laser_lance" - i think that i've made the list public.

And there it is, I always love the people who talk about the superior sound. It may not apply to you two, but 90% of the people that have made this claim in the past have poor audio equipment or set ups. I just made an off hand comment to my best friend about his collection. For him, the only reason he keeps it is some movies he has aren't available on DVD or Blu.

I always wondered about the superior sound... I am not saying it is better or worse that DVD but I would 'think' so as it is less compressed??? I have always been curious about it...

I could hear the difference on LD. AC3 vs the 2 channel mix. No contest. 2 Channel always sounded better.
