At the local tech where I go to school there is a CRT projector that has been sitting in a cabinet for over a year. Now that I am into CRT I was considering purchasing it. They can't sell it directly to me, but they can tell me when it goes to the govt surplus where it will likely be sold for around 100 dollars. I might even be able to check the set out before its shipped to the surplus. I was thinking of picking it up as a gaming set.

The description:

It's quite a small CRT, much smaller than my NEC XG. There is a lot less space between the edges of the lenses and the frame. It says Sony on the back, and I cant find any model number or other markings on it. On the FRONT there are 5 bnc connectors, as well as a BNC video connector. There might also be a VGA type connector next to them, and some big round connector I didn't recognize. On the far left front is the power cord. Sorry, that's the best description I can give from memory.

Sounds like a Sony 10xx set. Most likely video (480i) only. Not worth $100, or really anything other than free, in my opinion.

Sounds likes a Sony 10xx... 1020, 1030, 1031, 1040, etc.

The 1031 might be worth $99 since it can do 480p and barely 1080i.

The others are worth about $1.85 since they can only do 480i.

Thanks for the help guys, guess I'll be passing on this set unless it turns out to be the 1031, in which case I might consider it. It would still take another 50-100 though for a transcoder to get component into it for use as a gaming set, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

The 1031 I own doesn't have 5BNC connectors on the front, it has the DB25 that requires a special adapter.

I beg to differ. If it has 5 BNC connections it wont be 480i only. If it was 480i only, it would only have video and s-video inputs.

Does the set look anything like this shape wise?

That is a VPH-1001QM (2 different sets, bottom 2 pics are not my Sony), but the shape of the 10XX sets are all about the same as that.

If you just want it for gaming, it IS worth $100 in my opinion, cause the picture is good enough.

You can feed 480i through RGBHV. RGBHV is technically superior to both video and s-video inputs.

Yes mate im quite well aware of that part, but if a projector is going to be fitted with such an input, i would have thought it would have the capability to use the extra quality properly, i wouldnt think they would have a set limited to 480i when using RGBHV.

You dont reckon? Well if it was me, id take it, but then that is me, i wouldnt use it for playing PC games, and i wouldnt use it for DVDs, but i also watch alot of .avi movies and VHS tapes, and id be happy enough with this sort of projector for that, as well as for playing my older console games.
