Clarence, I'm not arguing with you. Looking back a few posts before the one you quoted, I said the price wasn't bad, that it was worth nearly that just in parts

I know you weren't arguing... I was just agreeing that this projector wasn't for you, but it could still be a fine projector for someone else (not as fine as Curt's projectors, of course). But don't underestimate the tubes as completely unwatchable.

Sure, it loses light output due to the visible wear and from the small raster, but the screenshots were from within the existing wear pattern. As an example, the OP has a 67"x37" screen... that's about the size that I had this G70 set up for the screenshots, and the light output was comparable to any other projector that I've setup on larger screens.

I also have some shots where I expanded this G70's scan width to the edges, so you can see the difference between fresh phosphor and existing wear.

Yes, the image would be probably 30-50% brighter with new tubes, but for anyone upgrading from a 7" ES projector, the worn tubes would still be watchable until better replacements are budgeted for.

I wish we had some way to track this.

I'd like to compare the percentage of Marquees that have blown HVPS, LVPS, and neck boards.

I think for every thread from someone selling a Marquee, you can find a statement implying that the Marquees are more reliable than Sony, NEC, Barco, Ampro, etc. But check out the traffic on Marquee failure threads and replacement parts being bought... Marquee has to lead by 2x-3x. But if Marquees are 3x-4x more common than other brands, then maybe it all equals out.

I've probably tinkered with 30+ CRTs... I wouldn't place "reliability" as a reason to rule one brand out over another (except Ampro, of course Wink ).

Dragan, you've probably bought and sold 5x as many Marquees as I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot)... I think you might be desensitized to the Marquee's failures because you've learned what to replace, what spares to stock, and how to do pre-emptive Maintenance to prevent common failures.

My impression is that G70's (and NEC XG) just don't have as big a supply of spares available because there aren't as many that have failed and been parted out. But there are dozens of people that have shelves full of Marquee spares.

I agree, personally I believe that all the major CRT's are close in reliability. Just becuase you had a bad experiece with a G70 doesn't mean that they are all doomed to fail Wink

If it's local, that's a great deal. Save up and buy tubes later. Even $1250 for the projector and near mint tubes is a nice price. Heck, buy the projector, learn how to set it up and play with it with minmal $$ invested (while continuing to budget for tubes). If you decide you like it, you can get a set of tubes which you might have to wait for or Curt may have some 7-8 rated tubes with bigger wear patterns you might be able to get a deal on if he has any available. I've seen him sell tubes on e-bay before.

If you decide (by some fluke) that you hate CRT, part it out and make more than you paid for it, then you'll have some money saved up for the tubes and be able to buy a new bulb for the Optoma. Wink

It comes down to what you are willing to spend. I can tell you that I researched digitals for several years before going CRT and CRT is still the way to go. That G70 will blow your mind compared to the HD70.
