Ottawa is not even close to top of the list, 1200 ft condos in the Wall center in downtown Vancouver sold for 1 million or over 800$ a square FOOT!! and average residential real estate costs in Vancouver and Calgary have been leading Canadian markets for years.

Winngs in Australia are free of taxes. So if you win a million or 30(as one man did last year) you get to keep it. The Tax system in the US suckes when you can even be given something without having to pay a large tax bill. It must frighten the sh-t out of people when they do win big!! How crazy is that.

Real estate prices up here can be brutal. And the interest paid out on the mortgage isn't tax deductable. Sad

Canadian real estate prices also haven't taken a big hit as there isn't a sub prime mess up here and the banks are stable.

Don't forget that the house is fully furnished, including luxury items like an HT, games room, 2 kitchens, etc. I'd say there's at LEAST $400K-$500K+ in there just for the furnishings and extras (non-attached items).

I know that all too well. Calgary's in a bit of a slump now though. Prices are down about 15% from summer time where prices peaked last year and nothing is moving. I bought not one, but 2 houses last year. Can't sell #1 after a $79k reduction ($429k to $350k) and 10 months on the market. It's now off the market looking for a renter that won't trash it. Then I'll wait it out a year or 2 and hopefully get a bit more out of it then.

That lotto house would be $1mil-$2mil in Calgary depending on where they put it.

I have been just about everywhere in the U.S.. One thing I know is that no matter which city you are in there will be different areas that are more expensive than others or more desirable places to live in that city. I think trying to match home prices between cities is pretty difficult. Yes, the average price of a home in Atlanta is down and somewhat less expensive than other places. Of course, metro Atlanta is like five million people. My example though was pretty much one of the desirable places in Atlanta. John's Creek is one of the wealthier zip codes. It has pretty much what most people are looking for in a nice suburban area. It has to be great, because Chuchuf lives there.Smile In downtown Atlanta and even in John's Creek, there are more expensive homes. The thing that interested me was in the relative comparison. This home looks similar to the house that my sister lives in. When they were looking at McMansions, the lot was probably an acre with a 8k to 10k sq/ft home in the same area for around a million. I guess what I am curious about is what value does Ottawa have to merit a high house price like that? In South Florida, yes all day that house would go for that price. Well, it might have. I am not sure what it would go for now. In LA, it probably would command that and more depending on the location.

I know someone selling a house right now. Within 1 week of the US crash her house was worth $20 000 less. Everyone dropped their prices. Fast forward 4 months and she's down another $10 000.

-$30 000 from September to January with a forcasted addtional %3 drop in pricing. It's a good time to buy if any of the g&^%amned banks will finance you.

One analist said it best: It's a lanloards market! Everyone is renting.

Well if that is a prize totalling 1.5 milion, one would have to deduct the 100K in cash, the 12K in property taxes, and 10K Groceries, the movers, and those lawyers are like orthodontists, buying Sim2s and Christies;-). Plus these are Canadian Dollars so multiply by 0.8 and were talking of 1.2 million USD.

If you win a bunch of cash, you just divide by whatever percentage. No biggie.

At least in the US, the government doesn't tell me what video games to play, ban movies and books, and plan on filtering every byte that goes through the internet based on a secret list of what's unsuitable for children AND adults.

Also, you'll only get taxed 15% on the interest income from the money you just won (or on the income from the business you just sold, etc).

There are reasons to dislike the US political system, but unfair taxation on those with a lot of money definitely isn't one of them! Mr. Green

Yeah, if my wife and won a million dollars in the lottery, we'd just "divide by whatever" and write a check to the IRS for about $320,000 - about a third of what we won. We keep just $680,000 even though we won a MILLION. Yeah, no biggie. Rolling Eyes

So, you're trading one freedom for another. It's not as though the federal government hasn't found PLENTY of other ways to infringe on our rights. Let's talk about eminent domain. That's such crap. If you want to talk about the ultra wealthy... fine. The Cessna Citation flying, 6-home owning, living on capital gains types have plenty of ways to work around the system, but could you define "a lot of money"? Because, from where I'm sitting, it's the people that work really hard, that invest their lives into their businesses, that make a million a year... They're upper-middle class, doing well, but working their asses off for it... They're doing well, but they certainly aren't buying private jets and islands in the Bahamas. THOSE people are the people who are getting SOAKED. Those people paying well over a third of their income in state and federal taxes. If you throw all the taxes they pay on property, sales on goods and services, LUXURY taxes, etc., most of them are paying over HALF of what they EARN in TAXES...

My dad isn't "rich" by any stretch of the imagination, but he and my mom PAY more in federal income tax than my wife and EARN. Think about that for a second... A modestly well-off couple in their 60's that own two small businesses that in total employ probably a dozen people, pay way more money in income tax than my wife and I make. No, that's not unfair. This whole tax debacle is interesting,I was just doing some figures the other day.
I'm a builder and have my own small business and dont declare everything I earn as some of it is cash Very Happy Some of the people I know who work in offices think I'm dishonest by my actions,but after doing my calculations,if I was to declare everything I earned and payed all appropriate taxes I would have to sell the house and go work for someone else,I just couldn't afford the repayments and the tax bracket I would be in would mean I would be working for the taxman just about every second day.
So do you think I'm a dishonest crook?

ecrabb, I wasn't saying that everything is fine and dandy here - what I was saying is that if you don't like a place that taxes the wealthy, the US is still going to be a hell of a lot better than Australia or pretty much anywhere (aside from Switzerland, etc) in Europe.

Oh, and by my reckoning, making a million a year does indeed make you rich. Most people don't earn more than that their entire lives. A million a year isn't even CLOSE to 'upper middle class' - not sure what middle class you come from. You're in the top 1% just for making $350k - how the hell is 3x that 'middle class'?

Am I gonna work hard to be rich and make a few million? Sure. Am I gonna bitch when I have $650k to buy toys after I make a million? f*ck no!

PT-AE2000U ? Wow. About 18 months behind the curve.

PT-AE2000U:

Brightness: 1500 lumens
Contrast: 16,000:1
Release date: Oct 2007

The new PT-AE3000U:

Brightness: 1600 lumens
Contrast 60,000:1
Release date: Oct 2008

Both 1920x1080 LCD. Obvious that the installers just put in old stock that they couldn't sell since they knew it didn't matter what they put in there. Nobody would pay money for a PT-AE2000U today, let alone 4-6 months ago.

Yup. That's for sure! Given that fact that everything was free, he definitely shouldn't be complaining! I know I wouldn't be. I just irks me that most of the installers probably did a somewhat half arsed job since well, everything was 'free'. I'm sure I'd be happy with everything in the house other than the HT. (Well, that and the bar in the basement with only 1 tap and all that hockey crap on the walls). Wink

Ahum, the 3000 was only launched at IFA, that's the end of August/ beginning of September 2008, shipping started later.
