Here is mine with a little gloss in the mixture. Flat looked like crap. My gloss level is probably only slightly higher than yours, Case.

That suits the PG well too Spanky, mine is still pretty matte looking at the moment, its a satin paint, but it comes out pretty flat, i didnt want to risk going with a full gloss on this one, the scratches will show quite badly i think. It says in the directions to polish it to the desired finish, its pretty hard wearing stuff once its cured.
My PG doesnt really have any marks on it, so it doesnt really need anything yet. Yours looks great in black there though mate

Hey,
I've been here off and on, but like many... once you actually get the projector working, you actually spend time in the theatre watching movies. I've put more hours on it in the last 6 weeks than I had in the previous year and a half! It's so nice watching it instead of "what's wrong with it?"

Cool, I'm getting ready to paint my case too. Just picked up some metallic charcoal gray Rustoleum spray paint. I've never spray painted something before so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Bought some primer and the gray and figured I'd just go at it and see what happens.

Gday Schmoe, im not an expert on painting by any means, but ive done a fair bit of it, so ill share what i do. Sand the surface to get it as smooth as possible and remove scratchs (not mirror finish smooth though) wipe clean with a damp cloth, then allow to be fully dry before painting, spray from about 200mm-275mm from the job, even strokes passing over the work without slowing or stopping. Its alot easier when there is no breeze, so the more still the air around you the better

It'd be great if those with custom painted cases would post their pics on here. I'd love to see some of the work others have done - perhaps get some ideas for my own paint job.

With my 1272 I sanded the scratches out, wiped it down with lacquer thinner to take off any dirt and oils, sprayed it with ultra flat black. Two coats just for grins. Cost me $7.00, looks just fine.
The Runco is already black so all I did was touch up a couple scratches with a black marker pen and... it looks just fine. Cost me $0.00.

Case,
I had to paint mine. The PG and most of these pjs look ugly in that beige. I had a couple of cases to play with and that was the first one I painted. I don't have a pic of the second one, which is the one I am using. I was playing around with Ferrari red, as that seemed to be popular. In the end, I think the semi gloss black looks good on the PG.

You want to paint the baby grand piano of cases? Is it damaged or something? Nevermind!!! I saw your photos. Too bad it's scratched up.
I watched a guy paint the front wheel cover of a Harley once using only 2 cans of spray paint (it had been damaged). He filled the scratches and used 20 very light coats of regular gloss spray paint. Took him all week, but it looked brand new when he was done. Basically, every time he walked by it, he'd give it a light coat and as the paint built up it became perfectly mirror smooth. He said basically said to just have patience with it and don't think too much about it. If you rush it, it'll look like crap and you have to start over. The 2nd can of paint was for when the nossle of the first gave any hint of spattering and he switched cans.

It's pretty banged up. I think the previous-previous owner wasn't really careful with it when he uninstalled it, since he was getting rid of it. It's got some nasty chips on the lens hood that we just patched up with epoxy last night. And lots of scratches on the cover. The original paint is flat black, not the drool-enducing piano black gloss. So, yeah, it needs some paint.

Sorry, was busy editing my last post. I remembered you posting pictures. I can't wait to see these all when you are done.

It does mate yes, it looks great in that pic you posted. Not too sure yet, but it looks like we may have a couple PGs coming in here in various conditions, a mate of mine has been looking at a few of them. We have a 9PG each at the moment, both with perfect tubes, these other PGs range from a non working 6PG with near perfect tubes up to a 9PG xtra with badly and unevenly worn tubes.

I actually just started painting the sides of my Marquee 8500's case today. I sprayed 2 coats of primer so far, and I'll start with the matte black paint later tonight when I get home. I had already painted the top covers black, so I'm only doing the sides right now. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I took the plastic pieces off and painted them seperately like you did. It was pretty quick. I think the hardest piece is the front piece with the connectors, maybe 15 minutes. If I didn't paint for a living, then I would use Duplicolor.

Hey, you made a Runco 900. I have one of those, looks just like that. Runco didn't use primer over the beige and the paint chip's way to easy.

|
|
To paint the plastic sides of my 8500's case, I first applied 2 coats of Valspar plastic primer. Then I used Rustoleum Universal all-surface flat black paint to paint the sides and the back piece.
Here are pieces ready for paint:
Here are the finished pieces. I applied 5 light coats of black paint to all 3 pieces.
It was really hard to get a good picture in the theater since the lighting is not set up to illuminate the projector. This was taken with the flash. You'll also notice I made some felt covers for the glass doors of my component cabinet as a test to block out all lights and reflections, and it's awesome. The theater now goes pitch black during black scenes.
Movie time!
