Someone was talking about a mini version of XP all stripped out of all the fluff. Anyone know what this is called? I think someone said they had a version on their wifes laptop and all it lacked was dialup support.

I was thinking of trying a mini install of XP, a cut down version of Nero, Omega drivers for the ATi card and PowerDVD ultra.

Anyone know what that version is called? I'll see if I can find it here locally.

It is called

Windows fundementals for Legacy PC's

WinFLP

I installed it on th ewifes 1GHz Celeron, and it runs great. No crap, just staright OS. So far everything I have installed works with it. Except DUN of course.

I used a touch screen back in the 70's on a system called PLATO. Hated it. Partly because the resolution back then sucked, but mostly because you had to hold your arm up in the air to touch, and your arm got TIRED really fast. Touchscreens work great for small handheld units, but for hours of use on a real monitor I'd much rather have my arms resting on the desktop.

P4 Celeron, 128mb Ram About 6 years old.

The OS running uses about 80mb. I added another 128mb to make it purrr now. WinFLP has breathed new life into the machine.

Hm. Looks like WinFLP is based on Windows XPe (XP Embedded), a reduced-functionality version of XP that runs on thin clients. Apparently it also runs on the Asus EEE PC. But Microsoft says it is "exclusively" available to Microsoft Software Assurance customers, and it is NOT available (legally) through retail or OEM channels.

So if you want to try it, you'll have to find it on a torrent or similar black-market source.

MP,
MS can't touch you if they don't know about you. Don't go their website and do updates. If your current non-MS software doesn't need to be updated, then you should be fine the way it is.

Interesting. I don't do the torents thing myself. I was thinking of just buying a busted laptop and getting the COA off of there and the Windows disk of course.

Time to bump this up so I can find it.

I'm considering a 5.6" palmtop/netbook. Unfortunately it comes with the Vista Virus. I'm thinking of playing with a mini XP if I get it.

Not sure what you are looking for, but if it is for an old laptop then why don't you try Ubuntu. Actually, I think Puppy Linux would be even better. It runs in 70mb of RAM. I never knew how fast a computer could be till you run the OS in RAM.

Remember the old DOS days and RAMDISK? That's when you could get the 3 critical system files all on one floppy and definately all in RAM to run the thing. Ahhhh the good ole days.

The software I wanna run won't run on Linux. Everything's written for Winblows.

I'm considering a Fujitsu 820. It comes with the Vista Virus. However Fujitsu released XP drivers for all the touchscreen stuff and internal components so I thought I'd try that.

In the mean time I borrowed an MSI 10" netbook to play with.

Have you tried TinyXP?

Also, I have been running Vista SP2 on my laptop for eight months and I have been impressed. I don't think Vista is as bad as everyone says it is.
