|
|
finally getting back to re-setting things up...
The PS3 offers over toslink:
Dol Dig 5.1
DTS
AAC
Lin. PCM 44,48,88 and 176
I am going into a Lexicon MC12.. It doesnt decode all the new TruDolby etc... What is my best selection if I want the Lexicon to do the decoding?
Thx
Scott

Scott, I would imagine the MC12 will handle everything in the list but AAC, so I'd tick everything but AAC. AC-3 (DD), and DTS will be sent as bitstream, which will let the MC12 decode them. The PS3 won't bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA (and it won't work over toslink, anyway), so you're set there, too.
IIRC, all BD's have a "core audio" track that's either 640kbs AC-3, or the higher-res audio gets decoded and re-encoded on the fly to 1.5mbps DTS - I'm a little fuzzy on that one, though.

I was just worried that if I ticked DTS or Dolby the PS3 would decode them in the PS3 instead of the Lex..

Ah. No, by ticking those, you're telling the PS3 what formats your outboard decoder CAN handle. In other words, by ticking them, you're saying, "Go ahead and send these out the SPDIF. DON'T send out the formats I have ticked." Not sure what happens in each case with things you don't tick. For instance, if AAC isn't ticked, the PS3 would decode the AAC and send PCM, and it would be downmixed to 2-ch PCM, I think. Not sure what happens in other cases such as 176khz PCM.
You'll know if it's working because the MC12's AC-3 or DD decoder should light up with that source material. If the PS3 were decoding, then you'd probably get stereo over SPDIF (because SPDIF won't handle multichannel PCM) and the Lexicon should display something like "2.0 PCM" and will default to L7 decoding. The difference should be quite audible, too.
