Anybody have any input on my current crazy idea?
I have a Denon 1600 modified to output SDI. Currently I run it into a DVDO HD+ with SDI card. Works nice.
I just purchased a DVDO VP50 with SDI. I also just purchased an Algolith Mosquito HDMI. In the video chain the Algolith is supposed to be placed between the source and the scaler to work properly.
Here is the question. Since the Algolith does not have SDI input and I really want to add the mosquito removal to the Denon, I am looking at a SDI to HDMI converter. Anybody have experience with any of this? I don't mind the minimal expense to get rid of the mosquito noise. (now that I sort of know what mosquito noise is)

Ray, you could much more easily get a vp50pro and use SDI directly and have MNR
the MNR on low on the pro makes a SDI DVD image a pinch better for sure

Thanks Gary. I was actually hoping you would jump in. I would love to go to the pro, but I just got the vp50 and the mosquito for so cheap I am going to have to wait a while before I can drop coin like the pro demands. Since the MNR dos help a pinch, a pinch I shall take.
And by the way, the HD134 vr's you sold me are SWEET. I haven't even installed them yet but I sure have enjoyed just holding them and thinking about how kick @$$ they are going to be once I get em on

glad to hear they arrived ok, I am sure you will find a bit better focus with them, my and Cliffy sure did
can you send the output of the VP50 thru the mosquito and then from the mosquito to the PJ, it should have a bypass on it when you don't want to use it
I have never used one of the units so if this is obviously bad advice just let me know
I am sure the Mosquito is a lovely unit and performs wonderfully, to be honest the VP50pro MNR is not the best in the world so....
sounds like you have some nice upgrades in the works

Do you know what Mosquito noise is? It's an MPEG compression artifact and is present in the source. SDI should pass any such artifacts through, untouched. Lumagen deals with this to a large degree in their scaling process, so it's not surprising it may be masked in your setup.

Ray, just don't go after the blackmagic unit, it only works properly with HD-SDI sources
I still say put the mosquito after the vp50 and be done

Gary, I am honestly almost completely ignorant in these matters so my confusion comes from there. In the Mosquito manual it advises to place it after the sources but before the scaler because if the scaler is fed the image with the mosquito noise it will scale the noise as well. But if it is fed the mosquito free image it will scale that instead producing superior results. It sounds logical. My first thought was to also add the mosquito after the vp50 until I read that. It does sound logical doesn't it?
