|
|
I got a Lumagen HDQ, which has DVI ouput and RGBHV output. My XG has an internal Moome HDMI card. I am wondering which way to go is better, DVI to Moome or RGBHV to XG RGBHV?

Try them both and see.
$1 on RGBHV. The Moome card is too hot.

the new Moome HDMI is not too hot, the older DVI was slightly BUT with a scaler you could lower the video contrast and take care of that 100% perfectly

Mine is the old DVI version. The inside of this question is whose DAC is better. Although Moome's new version has deep color support, it is not necessary for a analog CRT because the anti-alias filter after OP amps will smooth the color. Regarding the gamma boost function, it can be done by HDQ. So in these condition, I don't think there is large difference between the old one and the new one. Most people use HDMI input if they have , but I believe the OP amps should be pretty good in a high-priced VP, so I raise this question. My HDQ is still being shipped and it takes a long time to go, so I can't test this by myself and I hope to get some experience from others to save time when installing it.

I don't understand this. Can you tell more? Why does the video cotrast do with the performance of the DVI version? One is analog and the other is digital.

I am still confused. HDMI only transmits the digital siganl, so the analog voltage output is from Moome's card. It should be limited under the video spec., e.g. 0.7V. So why does Moome's card drive the signal too "hot" so that we have to lower the digital side? If so, this should be a bad design, but I don't find this situation in my DVI version.
By the way, I check the spec. of HDQ. It has 10-bit DAC for analog output, but Moome's DVI version has only 8-bit DAC as mentioned above. It is supposed to be better to input the signal from HDQ, but in fact isn't it?

Maybe he is suggesting that the digital signal, which still has a voltage, is too high.

It is obvious that the digital signal is trasnmitted via voltage. Although it sometimes overshoots, it can work well. This is very normal for digital signal and I have never seen a system can adjust this voltage unless to the board level power adjustmetn.

I tried exactly this recently. Output of a Lumagen Pro with the latest software via RGBHV 1080p vs the latest HDMI Moome card driven directly. BR player, can't remember what model he had. 9500 Ultra in mint condition.
Very little difference really. I thought the Moome looked slightly better, he thought the analog looked better.\
THe customer is far more up to speed as to the latest firmware, signal processing, etc than I am. He spends quite a bit of time reading up on it.
Bottom line is, the difference between the two is not nearly as noticeable as I figured it would be. It's kinda like auditioning two high end speakers. They sound slightly different, but both are very pleasing.

Do you drive the HDMI card directly from the BD player or from the Lumagen output? I ask this because the Lumagen don't support deep color, but the HDMI card support. So if the HDMI card is driven directly from BD player and the deep color fucntion of both is turned on, there might be some noticable difference.

I think he implied the HDMI card driven directly from the BD player. Of course, not all BD players are created equally.

blu-ray deep color is nonexistant and if a player has the output ability then it is a mere upconvert mode which should be avoided
use 4:2:2 1080p/24 output from BD players, no conversions after the mpeg decoder output with that
