Hello,

at first: I know this sounds weird, because Sony 1272 arrent too popular these days. And I exectly know why!
But I love my mint 1272 very much. I tasted some sweet LC machines and customized some RVP 4010 for LC frontprojection. In the moment with modified HD-215 lenses. Good results, but a bit of corner focus weakness and I am still looking for other LC lenses for tests....

Now, I have one mint 1272 and two good BD 701. The Barcos I would also like to convert to LC, but this depends on the 1272 project and itīs efforts.

I was thinking to get some Barco Retro (80X) housings plus C-Element for the 07msp Sony 1272 tubes. But I use bigger screens than the HD-117-12 and HD-114 can focus. So there are only the HD-117-24. But these are too rare and I was not able to track them aanywere
Then I was thinking about alternatives. So what about the G70 housings plus C-Element in combination with the HD-18 Lenses or the HD-134 (gooooood luck finding them!).
I have never seen G70 tubes or lenses in real live, so recommendations or offers for burnt ones are welcome!

Has anyone an idea how hard it will get to free the tubes from the housings in the cases of Barcoretro,07msp or the G70 try?

Or any other useful comments alternatives are welcome.

Best regards from Munich

Hello,

yes there was the RVP 6010. I only could only get the RVP 4010. They scan 90khz, but only 8 zones and tubes smaller than 7" but LC! I got two with 300 hours...

Peace

As good of an old machine the 1272 is, I think mounting new housings to the old 07mp/07msp tubes and adding LC lenses like the HD-18 would be WAAAY more work than it was worth. I mean, it's kind of like putting drag-racing slicks on a 75hp 4-cylinder. Sure, ANSI contrast and optical sharpness will better, but you'll still be resolution limited by the tubes and bandwidth-limited by the rest of the video chain in the 12xx. You'd be putting a ton of time and money into a machine that just isn't in the same league as what you're trying to emulate (8" LC).

I know 8" LC machines are much more expensive overseas than they are here, but I'd lean that direction. If that's not an option... The one upgrade that might be worth doing (IMHO) on the 12xx machines would be using Joust's HD-8 adapters (or engineering something yourself) to mount a set of HD-144/145 lenses. Yes, ANSI contrast isn't quite as good as LC, but sharpness should be much improved over the stock lenses. That way, you can probably eek out a little extra performance from the 12xx without spending a whole bunch of time and money that won't be worth much of anything to anybody besides yourself.

Still, I'd probably save my money for an 8" LC machine. A G70, 808 or XG is a BIG step up from a 1272. I know, because that was exactly the upgrade I did just about 8 or 9 months ago.

I have a question. Are the lenses called HD-134/144 or hd-134 and hd-144, are there different types or if I eBay those numbers i can confidently purchase the lenses. I have learned just enough of this hobby to not take anything for granted. I have 2 1272 and I love them, could they be better? you bet! am I gonna drop 3 grand on a better PJ not likely, so like thnoos@xp37+ I have more time than money and some tech knowledge. Its easier to find a few hundred to put into this hobby than a big chunk all at once. Besides I enjoy the tinkering Smile

So

joust mod $189
hd-134 lenses

or

hd 144 lenses

???$$$???

And is this the only mod that is worth doing to a 1272 ?

thanks

HD-144 (and 145) are Air Coupled lenses - like the HD-8's on your 1272, but a bit smaller.

An adapter could be make to make them fit - a simple mechanical mod.

It would be better to just buy a NEC PG Plus, Xtra or XG which has them fitted stock, and is MUCH sharper than a 1272. But these lenses would be a sensible upgrade if you can get a set cheap.

HD-18 and HD-134 are Liquid Coupled lenses. They require LC tubes with C-elements. It is a lot of work to convert an AC projector to LC - I know, I did it....but an XG and an XG LC are very similar. With a 1272 you would have to re-engineer the whole projector from scratch.

Better to buy a G70 or XG LC. Seriously, a 1272 is not worth this effort. A NEC PG Xtra/XG or Barco 808/1208 or Marquee 8500 is worth the effort.

Thanks for the recommendations, I really think about it more critical now....
