I'm getting wood. I just stumbled upon some 2008 CEDIA stuff and there Sony had on display a prototype 400 disk BD player. It will play BD, DVD, CD's and a few other formats. It will have RS-232 control along with IR. It will do BD live. It was said to be huge from a size standpoint but smaller than last years 200 disk machine. No price was quoted but I suspect that it will cost as much as a good used car They are hoping to have the first units ready during the first half of 2009. If last years 200 disk player was $2500.00 then I'll bet we're looking at a initial roll-out price of 3K-4K.

Wow! Something to hold your discs... for $7.50-$10 each. Ouch!

What I do not understand is that Sony has had 400-disk DVD-ROM changers for years. In fact, I own a 400-disk Sony DVD-ROM changer that I paid ~$350 for. This same changer could be bought with HDMI for under $400. So, how is it that a standalone BD Sony player costing $300 or less and a 400-disk Sony changer costing less than $400 combined cost so much.
Seems like a lot of f-ing milk in someone's bottle of joy. And to respond to Sony I will RIP, RIP, and RIP, mofo!

You can blame me for that one. If I want it, it's expensive or unavailable

I just think someone at Sony is on crack or something. They are not having to change out or reinvent the physical transport mechanism that relates to the carousel rotation, or the disk retrieval, or even the disk-ROM insertion. The only thing they had to do was ad a BD-ROM electronic transport that any $200 player contains.
And instead, Sony would rather push cowsumers into ripping BD content instead of offering a fair-deal product. A-holes! I wonder how hard it would be to make one myself using a DVD-ROM changer and the guts from a BD single-disk player.

Putting in the single disk guts would be nice but it wouldn't contain the menu structure to select one of the other 399 disks in the player. It would still think it's a single player.

Still no excuse for the bastards to tack on $2,000 of hollow reward.

Well Sony seems to have forgoten about the 400 disc BD changer they said was coming out in early 2009. That must have been a fart in the wind. I'm going to have to come up with some sort of reliable storage device for both SD and BD movies soon.

OK, 27 Dresses was definitely lame. I wouldn't mind that 2 hours of my life back. My wife and her friend didn't even like it. But, I have to say Superbad is pretty funny. I rented it, but then picked up the BD used. The BD version is especially funny with nice extra features. There's a funny interactive thing you can turn on in the menu and watch the move... OK, I just looked it up - It's called the "SuperMeter Curse Word Counter" - Everytime somebody drops an F-bomb or some other nasty word in the dialog, a little counter racks up the count. Pretty funny. Definitely a good disk to keep around if you like that kind of comedy.
Kal, I recognize the media shelves on the sides as IKEA, but where'd you get the big one in the middle? I need a couple of those. I'm going to build a frame and mount a couple of those on barn door rollers and attach it to some big utility shelves I built in my utility room. That way, I can just roll them to the side to get at the crap on the shelves behind. Might have to cut a row or two off, but I really like the width.

I realize John was just razzing Kal, but I'll second the sentiment about SuperBad and up it one.
For my generation "Fast Times" was the classic coming of age film. Then I wasn't really paying attention to such things for many years. Then, in my opinion "American Pie" became that for another young generation of movie fans. Unless something steps up to replace it I am thinking SuperBad will hold that mantle for this recent generation.
I enjoyed it immensely.

I made it myself. It's just a big (roughly 1/2" thick) laminated board from Home Depot (Around $20) plus a bunch of laminated shelfboard cut in half for the shelves. Home Depot does all the cutting too so the whole thing probably only cost me $40 or so.
I wanted to get more Ikea shelves to match the ones on the sides (yep - they're Ikea - good eye!) but they no longer made them when I went back to look for more.
