and hints on how to get this to work, i have spent some hours (more then ten), and by accident (it seams NVIDIA control panel does not remember or display what is really doing correctly) once got it to work (the only reason that number got so high was trying to recreate the event). the setup is VGA -> (This is just wire in wire out adapter, no smarts at all) -> RGBHV -> projector. i have been playing with setting to do with stepping times based around the 640x480 area with interlacing ever since, any ideas what setting i should use to make it work right? (or should i just "not use" svideo)

Cheers

AFAIK, the 1020 is a video only set, you'd need to recreate NTSC video timings to use the RGB input. Are NTSC video even 640x480 interlaced ? Or is it even lower resolution than that ? Personally, I'd check ebay for an old, old, Farouja processor that inputs plain NTSC video and outputs NTSC video over RGB. They used to sell for about $5. but they may just get thrown out nowadays...

The projector has R G B H V in, on bnc connectors, and it uses PAL to watch tv (i know sinful as that is), i dont think it know ntsc, but i could stand to be corrected, so as such on that point, how would i determine if it knows ntsc, or what to do about it?

PAL or NTSC, its a "video" only projector, even though you have RGBHV inputs, it will only accept plain video, not line doubled or anything else, only plain video.
The model number should give a clue as to whether its a NTSC or PAL version, IF they had different versions for the different standards. I *think* there was a PAL/NTSC button on the one I had, but that was a decade ago, its hard to recall...
Either way, if you want to use the RGBHV input, you need something that will output REGULAR VIDEO in the RGBHV format, afaik, there is no comparable computer resolution that will be compatible. If you stumbled upon one, it was likely out of the range of the units capabilities and it may have been a good thing that it didn't display it for long as I know the later, higher scan 1030's didn't have a "limiter" circuit and would kill themselves trying to display resolutions which were too high for them...

You can use that rgbhv input if you have standard dvd-player or set-topbox with RGBs out (scart) you need to build sync separator , LM1881 was IC that i used times ago when i had 1020 Sony. I newer testet it with PC, so with that i cant help.

There was schema for separating V+H from composite sync.
