Hello All

A BR caught my eye in Wallmart the other day and I was wondering whether it was worthwhile purchasing. It seems to be the series from which Serenity originated, or so I suspect. The br is called Firefly. Have any of you folk seen this series and would you rate it a worthwhile buy? Thumbs Up Thumbs Down
Maybe a show of thumbs would do

Thanks
Mark G

Sorry I'm a little behind when it comes to North American TV series.... I'm actually an African Canadian...for real, I truly mean that. Very Happy I guess the movie did make some semblance of sense, purely because I was not aware of the tv series.

I saw Serenity before I saw the series Firefly and fully understood the movie.

I went and bought the Serenity disk and found out about Firefly from that and got hold of the series, after watching the series I watched Serenity again and understood the more subtle jokes in it.

I highly recommend them to everyone. Thumbs Up

It's a pity there are only 14 episodes, they should make more but the writer is supposedly too busy with the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer to do any more episodes of Firefly.

Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me!
Take me out into the black, tell them I 'aint comin' back
I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me!
There's no place I can't be since I found Serenity
You can't take the sky from me!
Cool

Not the writers fault...the EXECUTIVES are the pricks who pulled the plug. We wrote tons of letters telling the network hacks to not cancel the show and then again to bring it back once they did cancel it. Suits did this.

Yep, Fox treated the show badly and then cancelled it. They played episodes out of order, they didn't even show the pilot episode until like halfway through the season! It is a very good series though, I would get the bluray. Serenity is coming out on bluray as well in december.

And the series wasn't a prequel, it came before the movie. So the movie was a continuation of the series. Best thing to do is forget everything you saw in the movie, watch the series, then watch the movie again.

OMG, is he still woking on that CRAP? I can't believe the same guy even made both series. The movie was a littkle disapointin comapred to the series becasue each TV episode onlt told one story in detail. The mvie crammed like a whole season into 2 hours. IT felt rushed and lacked a lot of detail. To listen to Wheadon talk about, he basically said he was just happy to be able to simply finish telling the story, but i'm sure he would have been happy to tell it differently. I guess it's juts a warning to other produers, Fox is wehre good ideas and creativity go to die. i'm sure if you have some sit-com or desperate house-wives drivel to sell Fox is great for that.

Huh? Where did you get this from?

There are only 14 because Fox canceled the series. Fox only aired 11 of the 14 episodes and aired them out of order aiding to its demise. Universal thought the movie was good enough that they decided to pick up the movie and their hope was that it would find an audience and lead to a series of movies. The movie did not do well enough for Universal to want to do that--so it is dead. Joss wanted to do this, it just didn't work out.

Eliza Dushku inked a deal with Fox and got Joss to write a series for her--Dollhouse which starts this January. Lets watch and see how Fox screws up this show also!

Crap? Have you every watched the TV series Buffy or Angel? They were much better than most of what is on TV. They were actually quite well written with much better characters than you get in, say, a Jason Statham movie! They were definately under appreciated shows.

Both Angel and Buffy have a huge cult following. Buffy had a perfect run and Angel was cut short by about 12 episodes.

If you've never watched the Buffy series you need to see 2 episodes. "Hush" and "The Body", they were both nominated for an emmy if I remember correctly. Of course there's the Buffy musical episode "Once more with feeling", which was hilarious.

Definitely get the Firefly series. You'll enjoy "Serenity" more if you do. I didn't start watching until after it was cancelled. I was pretty mad about that.

If you want to see Joss's latest... http://drhorrible.com/ Only viewable in the USA though...

Buffy was the best show of the 90's. It was so well written. At one point it ( and Angel of course ) were the only two shows worth watching on TV. Especially when everything else went 'reality' TV

I tried, but felt trapped in a teenage soap opera dressed up with Carnival horror house props. I couln't get to the off button fast enough.
Dollhouse OTOH looks like it could have real potential.

Damn suits! Evil or Very Mad

It looks like what happened to Red Dwarf, they had a series that was pure quality and cancelled it. Thumbs Down

The BBC is apparently making 4 or 5 more Red Dwarf programs that they are calling 'episodes' and are calling it the '9th series' but 2 are going to be 'making of' shows and 2 are going to be some assortment of clips, not what I call episodes or a series and lets not forget the 'movie' that still hasn't been made because nobody will fund it unless they change the actors to have Americans from Hollywood play the crew which would mean it wouldn't be Red Dwarf.

Firefly is exactly what I would imagine the colonisation of space to be, frontier law, a mixture of old and new weapons, a mixture of space travel technology and a tyrannical dictatorship trying to control everybody's lives.

I loved his concept. Star Trek was pitched as "Wagon train in space"--Joss set out to make a "real" space western. The thing I loved about it was the realistic story. Humans terraformed a group of planets in a "nearby" solar system. There is no faster than light (FTL) travel (which will most likely never be achieved because you can't move infinite mass and I don't think we'll master the concept of "dropping out of real space" to "fold space" or whatever). Because there is no FTL travel, there are no aliens. The universe is probably filled with millions of intelligent species, but we'll never meet them because we can't get to them.

I also like the theme of the planets as a confederation fighting a "revolutionary war" pitting strong centralized control without much concern for the "colonies" vs. autonomous de-centralized control.

This is one series that did not get its due.
