Well, I know you have a smile after the comment, but it wasn't just mag reviews. I know a couple of people who have pretty good knowledge of audio gave them a thumbs up for the price.
I agree with Curt. Good story Curt.
well if it's a HT rag then their review isn't worth the paper etc. Those guys endorese everything I recently read an article where they reviewed this set of speakers I've never heard of. They found massive problems, huge dips and humps in frequency response, impedance graph all over the place, major problems in listening tests, etc. They closed with " we still think this a good bargain at $4000." Shocked The ONLY mag I've read with enough balls to call crap as crap is Stereophile.
The speakers you linked to can't possibly deliver a full range and balanced sound to fill a normal 250 SQ FT HT, it's impossible and defy's the laws of Physics. Howver for 100 bucks no one should be expecting anything anyway. For some reason the myth, perpetuated by Bose, that small plastic boxes can deliver good sound lives on.

Curt, that was totally excellent. Thumbs Up They had a good one going for about 20 pages on the merits of calibration. Seems to have finally petered out.

I swear, if I had the creative writing skills of some speaker and cable manufacturers, I'd still be selling Sony 1270s for $3K. Smile

As I said, it wasn't just mag reviews. I remember a couple of people on some forums grabbing them. These were people that I know knew the difference between good and crap. I agree with you on the mags. They are mostly there to sell ad space. I haven't looked at a paper AV mag in a long time.
I never said the speakers would be great, but would be more than adequate for a lot of people. Would you need a sub? Yes, and the original system came with one. Would the crossover frequency to the sub (probably 200 or so) start to give localization issues? Yes. Zeb is only 18 or so. I am guessing that whatever sound system he buys now won't be around for more than a couple of years.
If Zeb really wanted to spend some money, then I would have recommended something better. I sold my PSB Stratus Golds for $600. For that kind of money, they would be a very good option. If he wanted to go DIY, then there are a lot of options. Matter of fact, if someone wanted an excellent system for a cheap price then I would say pick up some of those NHT Xds for $100 a pop. The cabinets alone are worth that and more. The Seas drivers are worth double that. Buy a mic and some measurement equipment and away you go. Probably the easiest solution would be to wait for John Krutke to design a crossover for it and then modify it for your room. Anyway, for less than say $1500 one could have sound that 99.99% of the population would be happy with. Add a sub and your done.
Drag, I know your an audiophile, but most aren't. Most people couldn't tell the difference or wouldn't care about the difference between a $1000 system and a $20k system. I remember speaking to Darin about this and he said he didn't really care about high end audio even after sampling some systems. The difference was negligble to him. I think Curt mentioned that he has a Sony system in his theater. At this point in my life, I know I don't care that much about high end audio. If I had a house, then I would probably go DIY with some Dayton RS drivers and either an infinite baffle or LLT.

8,000 Hz? Jeez, why bother not call yourself deaf and be done with it. I guess you are using 10-12" subs as tweeters? Very Happy

Hey, that whole post was complete sarcasm.

Oh yeah and my reply was too...Hell I did one of these online hearing test... I can't hear anything above 8Khz, too much loud rock and roll when I was younger. I wouldn't even be able to hear perky and sprited.

Anyone want to try the test it's here.

Ah, did that test a few months ago... 18khz at the ripe old age of 30, so I guess the techno music isn't as bad as the rock music. Wink
