|
|
Here are some pics of the tube faces on my Sony VPH-1001QM. Sorry about the quality (or lack there of) but this is the best my camera will do.
This unit was in action from somewhere around early 96, and it came out of service in about mid 2002. It ran almost every single day, usually for at least 8-10 hrs a day, quite often used to display KENO (those with a good eye will probably just be able to make out the KENO grid on the blue)
Here is the blue:
The green:
And the red:
The blue looks quite worn out, the green isnt too bad, and the red looks hardly worn at all. Although i cant set the horizontal convergence on this thing yet due to a failed board, i did set it up and manage to get it back far enough to line things up horizontally, and had no issues setting verticals, and coming from an LCD projector background, i was blown away at what this old thing could display even without being properly set up and with its wear, the contrast ratio clearly sh**s on anything digital!!
If anyone here with some experience would like to estimate the amount of hours this may have done, id love to hear your opinions

Hopefully other will chime in, but that blue looks like a pretty worn tube. It wouldn't surprise me if you got some run time out of it for a while though. Given the low lumen output of those projectors, it could put the run time into the 10's of thousands of hours. Can you get the hour meter to show? It would be interesting to see how may hours it has on it. I think tubes are pretty plentiful for those projectors. YOu should be able to find replacements pretty easily. Curt should have some.
On the flip sode of that coin, you might want to learn how it works without spending the cash and use the money to upgrade as opportunities to buy a better projector come up.

I would like to know if this thing can show an hour meter, but i havent been able to find one yet. Maybe someone here will know if that can be shown or not.
I have another convergence board coming for it so ill be able to line it all up properly then, even with that wear on the blue the picture was still reasonably good, although when i adjusted the size to get it into the virgin area the colour was quite alot better, so id love to see what one of these was like brand new out of the box.

i have two of these, with near new tubes at that, however sadly they have power supply faults (both the same, switch on, the HV does not come up, then switch off again) i'd love to fix them, will probably try it over this summer (Christmas)

Gday Electrogeek, if i had 2 of them id trade you a good blue tube for a good power supply to get you up and running again mate, if all goes well enough i should have a 1031 soon as well, but who knows what issues it has now cause it has dropped 2 tubes since they tried to prove it works for their ebay auction (i doubt its failed tubes though)
This 1001 i have here works fine with the exception of the convergence. Soon to be fixed and it will go into service for the NEO-GEO and maybe some 3DO as well

i have been doing some reading, i think i know what i will test next, it seams the fan sensor fails in them which causes them to shutdown as soon as they turn on, i will laugh if this is the fault

i am lucky in one respect, even if i dont get them fixed, their tubes are computable with my existing projector, and this means then that i have two complete sets of tubes for it (and i have a vidikron that also uses sony tubes that are compatible)

Im lucky enough to have gotten this old dog for nothing, i found it!! I can believe how good it is compared to what i thought of it when it came out of service years ago, cleaning the smoke tar off all the optical areas made a huge improvement.

Dont need them yet, i have delt with Curt recently, hell of a top bloke, exceptional service. Only really would consider swaping the blue tube, the green isnt too bad and the red is bloody good.

I have the VPH1000QM and have put over 80,000 hours on the tubes and they show no signs of wear, that one you have must have been driven hard to toast tubes like that.
I also own a 3DO and put maybe half the hours on it playing the 3DO.
I have games like Shockwave, Space Hulk, Scramble Cobra, Twisted the Game Show, Crash and Burn (I reckon the movie Death Race is a copy of this game ) and a few others.
Don't even try putting any resolution over 720 x 576i (interlaced not progressive scan) or you will fry it in seconds as it is standard definition only and doesn't have overscan protection.
Great find, I had to buy mine about 14-15 years ago.

Cheers mate, i think the 1001 might have different tubes to the 1000, im not certain on that though, i dont know if you have the 07MS tubes or the SD187 tubes (im pretty sure without looking it is the SD187 tubes)
I have Twisted, aint played it in many many years. Great fun game I used to play Need For Speed a hell of a lot (that is where i got the taste for C4 Corvettes) and Road Rash, but also have a heap of the American Lazer Games titles. Cant use the bloody gun on the LCD though!!
This unit used to display a hell of alot of static images, like the KENO game grid for one, it was on there about 50% of the time, so its quite amazing the white grid isnt burned in a hell of alot worse.
If all goes according to plan in the next 25 minutes or so, ill also have an NEC 9PG+ to go with it (if i dont get that one, there is another one for sale in Queanbeyan anyway, but its only a 9PG, not a +)

Sorry, but you have to be insane to spend a nickel on one of these. If the tubes cost more than about $3, I don't see how it is worth it!
