I have had two Extron 202xi boxes fail in the last 6 months. I have not been removing from them when I turn off my PJ and my STB remains on so they are getting a signal 24/7. I think they fail from overheating even though they have good airflow around them. The newer version (202rxi) has "improved ventilation" according to a spec I saw. Anyone have any similar issues with these? Is there a better box to use for VGA--> RGBHV with two sources?

BTW, there is a guy selling these on the bay with the special MBC cables for $8.50 each if you need one.

Here's my solution for "improved ventilation"!

I have two such boxes and I noticed (and read in several places) that they can and do run quite hot (heat can always promote failure). FWIW, I also noticed that one runs a bit hotter than the other (don't know why they have the same components inside as near as I can tell). So, I made a replacement cover to keep the units cool but the fingers out. I leave the original cover set over the top to keep dust out.

Just what I did. I also figured that keeping the heat down would keep the settings from drifting. So far (over a year or two) I haven't had any issues or failures. Wink

Good idea Picree. Where did you get the perforated metal you used?

No secret. I'm unabashedly a cheapskate. Believe it or not I had the patience to drill holes in some old aluminum flashing (roofing) and then spray painted it gray to match. If you have a little cash to burn, another option is to get some of the expanded/perforated aluminum air-duct grill sheets they sell at Lowes/Home Depot (very pretty and about the same gauge). Trouble is you have to buy an entire 3 x 3 sheet (I think it might have been pricey which is why I didn't do that).

Be very careful to get it flat though. There are some HV components close to the top that only have a thin non-conductive covering. I wouldn't do this and then put it somewhere that kids might be poking their hands into. A thicker stock material would be better for rigidity and to avoid inadvertent contact with internals.

The 202xi (stock) has absolutely no air vents so it's no wonder it gets hot.

Hey Picree why didn't you just drill holes in the stock case?

Way too thick for that many holes. Much easier to drill through the "tin can" material...plus if it didn't work out or I wanted to sell it I still had the original lid.

I've had 202xi boxes and never had a problem but they did not get a signal 24/7. I did upgrade to a 202Rxi, but again didn't have problems (but did notice an improvement in performance over the two 202xi boxes I used.

Every extron I have ever had - got blazing hot. Only had one failure.

The damn thing got hot when off - I got to the point of plugging it into a switched PS and leaving it off.

Good point, I should have mentioned that mine were all actually switched so they only got power when the system powered up.
