Hi,

Im considering a CRT projector as an alternative to 3x LCD monitors for use with super wide surround gaming, perhaps using the Matrox TripleHead2Go graphics module:
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/ad/gxm/th2go/wsg/
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/

Generally people are spreading images across 3 LCD monitors with this device (up 5040x1650, 4.8:1 Aspect Ratio, 5.2MP). A user on the Widescreen gaming forum recently posted an image of a CRT projector (NEC 1352LC) running at 1920x600 (wide, but "only" 3.2:1 AR and 1.1MP).

Would a relatively cheap and quiet (ie something like the DWIN 7" CRT or maybe some 8" model) be able to manage at least this res? Is it possible to get a 4.8:1 Aspect Ratio and somewhat higher vertical res out of such a class (ie not hyper expensive!) PJ?

I have had no trouble running 1920 x 802 progressive at 72 hz on my XG LC.

It's only 2.40:1 AR, but still wide.

You should be able to run whatever res you like, yes it is possible to run a 4.8:1 AR. Bizarre. but possible.

I would run a side-by-side blend of 3 LC CRT PJs each with their rasters maximized (5:4 aspect ratio). With blend zones that should allow you to achieve approximately a 12:4 (or 3:1 image) aspect ratio image that is roughly 20 to 22 ft wide (based on 8ft projection width per PJ and depending on width of blend zone) and roughly 7 ft high.
It would be significantly more immersive than a 4.8:1 aspect ratio.

I would run each of them at 1280x1024 at 75 Hz

Really? Ive been using Bandwidth calcs to try figure this out, the one below says you need 166Mhz Bandwidth to do 1920x802 which is well above even the best XG LC (150mhz) capabilities:

Am I missing something? Ive been ruling out different units that maybe I shouldnt have based on these calculators.
The other key question is there must be a max width to height physically capable from projectors (for example they surely couldnt project a 30pixel high 2500 pixel width image could they)?

The 3 projector setup is likely fantastic, however its over budget both financially, running cost, noise and space!

How does this Matrox unit work? If it needs difficult drivers, or is not compatible with directX/openGL, it might be difficult using it with games. When it's just imitating a very wide screen monitor, that might work.
As long as you can use a different graphics card with it, as Matrox is not so good with graphics cards suited for games. They're more in the professional market, it seems.

One of its main uses is games (as on the Widescreen Gaming forum link), you have described it correctly in that it emulates a very widescreen monitor to Windows (via hardware, not drivers). It also has bezel management software but thats really only applicable to monitors of course. It works with any graphics card, some videos of it in operation on Youtube, its very impressive.

I've been checking out the Matrox double head to go. Matrox has a blending software, but I can't figure out if or how it would work with the "to go" hardware. I found a thread with someone using one with a PS3, but I can't find that website again.

I have two BG1208's that I would like to attempt an edge blend or edge match. It will be all for fun and time wasting purposes, I like to tinker.
