Why would you want to power up the filament's when not in use ? Seems like that would reduce tube life and light output.

Seems like that would reduce tube life and light output. | they're not powered up at all, as in emitting an actual electron cloud. They have simply enough juice to keep them warm. Under these circumstances, and as long as the 6.35 voltage is stable, their have been documented cases of original tubes with tens of thousands of hours on them.
