Hi Gang -- I have a lens question. Is the glass from my 10Ls worth anything?
If you scroll down in this thread to where I have the pictures of my lenses, you can see the housings are pretty hammered. On the other hand, the glass lenses are in pretty good shape (I see an slight crack in the lens in the front of one lens assembly).
Are there folks out there who cannibalize lenses for the glass?
I hate to just throw them away.

Find some kid who wants to fry ants. Or better yet, offer them to your local school's science teacher.

Anyone interested in taking lenses apart for any reason should reconsider or be prepaired for a hair pulling experiance. I have done this before, a full set of lenses down to every last piece. It should be done in a "clean room" as it is just about impossible to get them back together without dust and smudges. But hey, don't trust me. Grab a old lens to try it on and see for your self. I'll never do it again unless it's a emergency.

I did it to a Vivitar Zoom lens I got at a pawn shop when I was 19. It was a great lens, it just had the grease run onto the elements. Took me a full weekend to get it back together properly. That was one of the niceest lenses I used on my Pentax K1000. Too bad it took a jaming nose dive into the floor a few years later.

I'm sure there are a lot of lenses out there, it would be nice to see them used for something else other then being thrown away.
The telescope idea sounds cool, I wonder if they would come close to being able to be used for one.

Hey...what's wrong with my glasses! Sure they're heavy and require me to wear a neck brace; sure they're so strong I can't look at anything with the sun at my back without starting fires; sure my sinuses are permanently healed shut; but on the plus side, I can see inside Messier 42 (Orion Nebula) on a clear night without a telescope!
