It's same thing with other vinyl materials I have seen. For example M1300 and Studiotek 130 are bleeding through.

Yes, every vinyl material I've seen bleeds though.

But, I don't think the Draper 1300 is as good as the Studiotek 130. The Draper 1300 does not have as much gain as the Studiotek or Da-lite.

As for the 1.5 da-lite, I'll have to look again, but I think the issue with that one was that I could see the texture of the screen material from my position. On a positive gain screen, this texture looks like "sparklies" especially on shots of the sky and the like.

Read this:

http://www.projectorcentral.com/home_theater_screens.htm

I know it is a "digital" site, but screens are screens and it presents actually data to compare different screens.[/url]

If you don't want to spend the bucks but want positive gain, Da-lite 1.3 gain (though it will be a little softer than than any other of my recommended options) or Hurley 1.5 gain.

If not this, than a painted screen.

I've compared screens from Stewart, Da-lite, Hurley, Carada, Draper, Goo Systems, and white paint. The above is how it shook out for me.

What are some good suggestions for someone wanting 1.3 to 1.5 gain and a good *sharp* screen. I'd be willing to spend upwards of $500 for the material only, and then build my own static frame.

I had planned to go with a torus & pearlbrite, but I really don't think I want to live without an easy masking system. The Stewart Studiotek 130 would have been my second choice, but I think the material is upwards of $1000? Confused

I was quoted 21 bucks a foot from Av Science. If I were to replace my (blackout) 80x45 screen with that material, it would cost approx 525.00.

Currently I am using a doable board from home depot, its similar to melamine, but has a white vinyl covering on it which doesn't hot spot like melamine. In my opinion it works really well and its cheap and easy to hang(1/4 board), only problem is it only comes in 8ft sheets so for a 16x9 screen you can only do 49x87. Theres a pretty big thread about it in the DIY screen section on AVS, just wish I could find something similar in 10 or 12 ft sheets

You are right about hint smaller gain and that's the reason why I prefer M1300 better. I'm pretty sensitive to hotspot and colour sift and I see those both more with Studiotek 130, whick is normal due bigger gain.

Checked up on the M1300 a bit. You guys forgot to tell me that it's semi-expensive! Very Happy

Not as bad as the Studiotek 130 though, thankfully. I may be giving this M1300 a try soon. I'll need a small screen for my temp-apartment, so I'll be on the lookout for something like a 70 or 80" width.

I take it back, the M1300 isn't very expensive.

Quote:
$4.50 per square foot

Please enter the qty as Sq. Ft. (Rounded up to a Whole Number) 41.1 sqft = 42 Billable sqft

Inches:

58“ x 104” = 6032

Then divide your Square Inches by 144 to get your SQFT

6032 / 144 = 41.88 SQFT

Rounded to 42 SQFT

So a 106" 16:9 screen would run ~$150 for the material.

I don't know what the material would have gone for separately, but a couple of years ago when I bought my 100" NTSC M1300 Draper the cost for the screen material, frame, and shipping was something like ~$450.

At the time, I had seriously given thought to a TerryTorus, but Vutec didn't have the PearlBrite material in stock and couldn't give me an ETA. I've seen the PB in Terry's setup and it is nice.

I've tried dozens of screens. This latest one is the best one yet...

This 5x10 sheet of Wilsonart Designer White makes a very nice screen surface.

Here's the shipping box in front of the 115" wide screen I've been using for a couple of years....

...it's simply drywall painted with Kilz2. I used Sherwin Williams Ultra White before that. And I've used BO cloth, parkland plastic, white Formica, 4x8 melamine, pull down screens, and Video Spectra screen material. Plus an untold number of painted mirror and rear projection screen tests.

I've been tempted to buy a $750-$1000 permawall screen for the past couple of years. It's actually not the cost that's holding me back, it's the potential for damage from my young sons and the neighborhood kids... there are several kids in our HT daily. They're usually well-behaved, but the young, grubby hands always go straight for the screen (as can now be proven by the current Kilz2 surface). The rest of our HT is durable and kid-friendly so a durable screen is essential.

I had a 4x8 panel of melamine MDF before. And it made a great, durable $25 screen. But 48" wasn't high enough for my preferred screen size.

My current projected image is 65"x116". I recently started re-assessing screen options because with the lights on and from very close-up at just the right angle, I can notice the drywall seam from using 8' sheets of drywall on a 14' screen wall.

This wilsonart is 61" high. So I can easily adjust to 61" x 108".

The wilsonart sheet unrolled nice and flat after I cut the 3 straps that kept it rolled in the shipping box.

I simply propped it up against the wall and tucked it behind my speaker columns. It held itself up pretty nicely... when I mount it, it'll be a couple of feet higher, but with the bottom edge on the floor, this left a nice strip along the top so we can see a comparison against my previous screen.

These are 1080i from a Motorola 6412 HD cable DVR deinterlaced to 1080p with a Lumagen HDP scaler. Canon S45 digital camera on tripod. No flash. Auto settings. Resized to 640 pixels.

In this screenshot, I stood by the screen to point at the seam. The image above my finger is the Kilz2 screen. The lower part of the image is the new Wilsonart sheet of laminate...

I tested from the side to check the viewing cone. Interestingly, it dropped off less than the Kilz2...

Very nice surface... affordable, zero spraypainting tools or talent required, durable, ideal texture, nice gain, true colors, and great contrast. I don't see any indication of glare or hotspotting.

These preliminary tests have proven that this surface is worth permanently adhering and trimming to my wall... I'm going to use black velvet masking adjustable between 16:9 and 2.35 aspect ratios.

Up to 61" x 108" for $96 (-15% for qty 2+)...

I hereby give it a "thumbs up" for CRT.

My personal preference is for one page to check out all combined topics... that way everyone doesn't have to click on all 13 of the sub-forums just to see if anything interesting is being discussed.

Obviously, you can leave this post hidden in this sub-forum, but I'd venture to guess that most people who might be interested in this topic won't see it here.

How about if I created a new thread without "screen" in the title?
Something like "How to improve your CRT PQ for <$100"

My preference was also to have everything in one forum for that exact reason (less jumping around), but everyone else seems to want separate forums. Time will tell what works out.

I'm almost done moving threads around... getting sick of it. Smile

Just curious:

Any idea what sort of gain you're getting with the Kilz2 painted drywall? Or the new Wilsonart Designer White surface? It's certainly brighter!

I wouldn't say it's brighter -- it just has a better viewing cone. From straight on, I can barely see the difference between the two. If Clarence wasn't there pointing out the line, I wouldn't have found it. The only place I can see it at all is right above Darla's right eyebrow.

Of course, a wider cone with identical on-axis brightness does imply more light being returned from the screen. I suspect the Designer White has more uniformity even from an on-axis viewing position, since you wouldn't have as much drop-off from the edges of the screen.

Might be time to replace my BO screen. I sure would like more "pop" and I've dreaded trying to paint one.

After reading through the spec sheet, it looks like we can use the 335 material "Vertical postforming standard grade laminate". It's thinner and lighter and cheaper, but otherwise the same material.

But I'm going to see if I can find a local dealer to sell me a single sheet - shipping to my location is more than the cost of the material.

But THANKS CLARENCE for the tip!!!

Guys,I am going to attempt a torus soon,I will be building a solid screen and have a great idea for the masking, the only things I'm not sure on is the radius of the curves and what material to use to go on the solid frame.

Screen size will be either 110 or 120 inch diagonal 16:9 in a dedicated room lit up by a G70,any opinions or criticizms will be appreciated.

You may want to start another thread with "torus" in the title. It will get more visibility.

Clarence,

Did you ever mount that WilsonArt screen in your HT and are you still pleased with it?

Sorry for the delay... I don't check the subforums too often.

Yes, I love the wilsonart. Best screen I've ever used or seen. If someone offered a trade for a $2000+ Stewart, I'd take the trade, take a couple of screenshot comparisons, then sell the Stewart and buy another $50 sheet of laminate.

I've mounted it and bordered it with 3" velvet trim.

Incredible stuff.
