I have been looking for screen material and was wondering what a good choice for a 6pgextra would be. I am currently using painted MDF,16x9 at 96'' wide. Can you purchase just the Mat. and has anybody used plastic lam. or Melamine. P-lam and melamine both can be had at 5'x12'. Also Doug is coming by to fine tune the PGextra, how important is it to have the screen done? Thank You,Rick

From my research the Stewart Studiotek 130 is the best choice for CRT.
Read this review:
http://www.projectorcentral.com/stewart_screens.htm
It's kind of pricey; From Av science fabric alone is 21.00 sq/ft. When I can decide on what I am going to do with my theater, I will be getting this.

Studiotek 130.
If you don't want to spend the bucks but want positive gain, Da-lite 1.3 gain (though it will be a little softer than than any other of my recommended options) or Hurley 1.5 gain.
If not this, than a painted screen.
I've compared screens from Stewart, Da-lite, Hurley, Carada, Draper, Goo Systems, and white paint. The above is how it shook out for me.

I just tested Wilsonart "white" (36''x36'') in the middle of my Behr UPW, not much difference, but the white does seem whiter.........So with the Studiotek 130 are there certain sizes that you have to buy?

You can buy sized, pre-made screens from Stewart. Or, you can just get the fabric and DIY.

cabinetguy,
I have a permanent screen that I made with DIY material that looks very nice but I would like it to have a little more gain. I am interested to know how the melamine works as I think it might have a little more gain than my screen material.
If the melamine hotspots I wonder if you couldn't spray it with a matte clear coat to take some of the sheen off without losing the the nice bright white base. I have painted a few bikes with matte clear coat with good results. I wonder if it would work?
I am anxious to hear your results.

Ridebreck is on vacation but he has some comments around here about his screens--search for his posts. He was using a melamine board and I saw it. It did hotspot a little. He ended up painting it with Behr UPW and I think it looks better than the melamine.
If you want positive gain, you will need to go with a comercial screen, but beware, many lie about their gain. For instance Carada's 1.4 gain screen had not more gain than a Hurley 1.0 gain screen.
I've seen a few of the eBay DIY screen material and many of those have negative gain (that is they are less bright than a Behr UPW screen).

Melamine is a little to shiny, I feel that the Wilsonart ''white'' is better as it has Texture. I am going to install a sheet this weekend. What the he*ll its only $1.30 a ft.

What are some good suggestions for someone wanting 1.3 to 1.5 gain and a good *sharp* screen. I'd be willing to spend upwards of $500 for the material only, and then build my own static frame.
I had planned to go with a torus & pearlbrite, but I really don't think I want to live without an easy masking system. The Stewart Studiotek 130 would have been my second choice, but I think the material is upwards of $1000?

Here is something...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projection_screen#Screen_gain
I have used white copy paper for 1.0 gain reference. Order sample piece of Studiotek 130 and you have reference for 1.3 gain also. With those references in the middle of the screen you can estimate other materials...

It have about 0.05 smaller gain, that's why I prefer it over Studiotek 130.

You are about Carada as I have the 1.4 Brilliant White (I think that is what they call it) screen and there is a lot of bleed through, that is if you look at the back of it when the projector is on you can see the picture and a fair amount of light bleeding throgh. I know you cannot lose that much light and have a positive gain. Still the picture is just fine for the price I paid and I don't push my tubes hard anyway. Due to time contraints I didn't want to go the DIY route and at the time I didn't want to spend the money on something better.

For example M1300 and Studiotek 130 are bleeding through. Draper are recommending dark back area behind vinyl screens to prevent reflections. Don't know for sure about other manufacturers. I use black curtain about 2" behind screen material.

copy paper makes the colors look washed out in comparision to the P-lam.

You aren't the first person to recommend the 1300 as an alternative to the 130. Guess I'll have to seriously consider it then. Thanks!

I've heard nothing but good about that screen, but was under the impression that it was designed specifically for digital projectors and not CRT? I could certainly be wrong, I just remember reading something about that a year or so ago.
