TV/Projector: Marquee 9501LC / NEC 9PG+

I agree with emdawgz1, I'd take the NEC too. If he's local, you'll want to check it out before forking over the cash. Fire it up and listen to the noise as well as make sure the tubes aren't toasted. It will likely be quiet where it is, so you'll be able to decide if it's too noisy. I demo'd a Panasonic 900au back when I was thinking digitals and I found it just as noisy as my NEC PG+, even worse because the digitals noise was a higher pitch. The low hum of a CRT is not as annoying. If you don't watch movies on "mute", then you'll never hear it during a movie. I know as I sit right under mine and I don't crank up the volume.
Also, the NEC XGLC's are 8th on the "Best projector list" which is much higher than the Marquee, but I know the Marquee guys will defend it anyways.
http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm you'll likely not need to upgrade from the XGLC. In a few years when I can afford to upgrade and if I can't get my hands on a Marquee 9500LC, an NEC XG LC will likely be my next projector.
Another thing is you can hotrod a Marquee, but you have to spend a lot of $$ to do that. You can however, now get a Moome HDMI 1.3 card for the NEC XG's now.
One guy to PM, would be another new guy Satinier. He just got an NEC XG75 and just spent the last couple weeks getting help here setting it up. I think he's pretty happy with it. http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=3626 I'd ask him how he found the XG experience. I have the PG series, which is a bit different, but I think the setups are pretty close in difficulty.
While you are deciding, look through the NEC setup guide and see if you think it's too hard. I can personally say it's not as hard as it looks, just do a good setup BEFORE you ceiling mount it. They are much easier to work on things like astig/ centering magnets from a table. I learned the hard way.
https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=10379.html
The only thing with an NEC (especially if you have to start from scratch) is you won't be watching a movie the first day. You'll want to pick at it over a week. If you work at it too long, you will start to get frustrated and mad at it. This is supposed to be a fun hobby.
Keep us up to date with your thoughts!

My only concern is, will the NEC be double the price better? I'm getting the Marquee for a fairly good price(even with shipping), the NEC would be a little more than double that price.
Also, can't you upgrade the Marquee 8110 to a 9" model? Would that make it comparable to the NEC?

Sorry for all the questions.

It's twice the money and also twice as loud or at least louder. The Marquee is a super great PJ. And Doc is a well known member here and I am sure he'll back it up, almost as good as getting it from a reseller. LC machines are nice but watch out for Glycol leaks and venting the LC chambers as pressure can build up and crack the tube face . NEC's
are known for this IIRC. Plus with the money you save on the Marquee you can get the Moome HDMI card for less than the price of the NEC, and with the savings you can get a set of HD145 lenses and the plates to install them. For HDMI you can get a card for the NEC but now your over budget
but its up to you, If you dont take it and its still for sale in a couple months its mine !!!!

PS and that case is wife freindly, nice and sexy

yes you can or you can upgrade it to and 8inch LC model too. I may have a set of mint 8 inch LC tubes in housings i might not need soon, have to wait and see how my 9 inch hybrid tube project goes.

There you go. At least you've weighed the options and you've had a number of good replies. I will admit I'd love a Marquee too, but for me it would have to be a 9500LC. I don't want to spend the time upgrading it over and over to get it there, but that's just me. I know a lot of the marquee guys find that upgrading is one of the selling features. Get your Marquee and upgrade as time and money allow. The nice thing is, a lot of guys have done it so you'll have tons of support.
Good for you. Let us know how it goes!

Yes sir! The advice here has been great! Thanks so much guys!
It'll be a couple of months before I get it set up and going. Still have to knock a couple of walls down, sheetrock, paint, carpet, then install everything.....FUN!! The wait will be worth it.

Well, thanks to drice1234(Dan), he invited me over to his home to view his D50 he had set up floor mounted on a 110" screen. So I've seen my first CRT in action! I must say that Dan is an incredibly nice guy! And a very good guy to open his home up to a complete stranger. Dan your HT room is awesome! He's spent a lot of time and money on his set up. Very nice looking!
Impressions of the CRT, WOW! The image on his D50 was crisp, full of colors and very life like. I've seen similar images on higher end digital projectors, but the CRT did this while still being easy on the eyes. Not sure how to explain it, but with the digitals, I almost had to squint in some scenes due to being overly bright. The CRT flowed very nicely. I guess I can sum it up by saying that the image was crisp and sharp, yet relaxing.
So I am sold on this prehistoric technology

If you think the 7 inch sony looked good ,wait till you see a top notch 8 inch set !!!!! The Marquee is a much nicer set. Wish I lived near you to help with the set up, But the Marquee is very simple to get a quich set up, just follow the onscreen guid and then after you get comfortable in setting up a crt you can tweek it till no end. Id get the set up guide dvd here as well its great for beginners.

Nick,
Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the crt family. Its unforuntate you didn't get my XG LC machine, it really is one of the best, but it looks like you made the best choice for yourself. Seems like I will just have to give my projector away now. The lady wants it out of the house, its taking up too much space in her scrapbooking room!

Don't you have a "man room" or garage or basement you can put it in? My wife didn't want it in the den (slowly being assimilated into a scrapbooking room), so now it's in the family room. "Aw shucks, honey... if you insist it comes out of the den I'll find a place for it... trust me."

I think what he meant by Go Away was, the more people interested in crts, the harder it will be to find great deals.
Thats all.
