I happened to see a Toshiba 50H81 RPTV on Craigslist today, for the bank-breaking (well... it doesn't take much to break a bank these days, does it?) price of $100. When I emailed them, they dropped it to $50 immediately, needing to get rid of it before they move. The catch, apparently, is that it has a broken power switch.
Now, I have reasonable confidence, given my other technical endeavors (see avatar) that I can fix the switch.
I also already have a Toshiba 42H83, which is apparently the smaller brother of this one. I love it dearly, but its focus isn't so great, and it has a serious wobble problem which I haven't bothered to fix yet - it involves changing a bunch of caps. On the other hand, it already has upgraded convergence ICs, which tend to die like flies on these sets.
The question is this: Is it worth the time/effort/$50 to snag this, fix it, and replace the existing TV? I'm fairly certain I could get $50 back for it (I almost got $300 for it in the spring). But it's some work.
These guys really want to get rid of the thing, and I have to think some other people would bite given the situation, so any advice is appreciated! (Sorry for the OT post... Not much traffic in the other forums for a quick answer...)

Also, they could have no clue what is really wrong with the set, and are claiming a "broken power switch." Possible it is a bad power supply or who knows.

Supposedly, they had a tech looked at it, and the tech pronounced the problem to be the switch. Of course, it wasn't Curt, so it's certainly possible he got it wrong.

If it really is the switch, then I would jump on it. The only thing that worries me is that if he/she is so quick to get rid of it and they can easily drop the price, then they could easily lie about whats wrong with it. But then again, 99% of the experiences Ive had through craigslist have been great. If you dont get it working do you think you could resell it for $50? If the answer is yes than you know what to do.

I decided I had to let it go after making a list of the other stuff I have to (and want to) do. In particular, the astig on the 808 is in serious need of a redo, so other projects will have to wait...

probably a switch mode power supply, and "switch" and "power" were the only words they were familiar with.
So now it's the "power switch" that's broken

Just because it is a good deal doesn't mean it is a good deal for you.
