|
|
Hi, guys. I have a first-batch EXT-HD box with the ringing fix and other fixes, and until now it's been great. Actually, everything is except its component input.
Last night, our satellite receiver's HDMI output died, and I figured that I'd just hook it up via component to the EXT-HD until a new one arrived. I was surprised to find that component-in gave me an all-red image, just as if the blue and green guns were off. I triple-checked the wiring and unplugged and replugged the cables. Same thing. So I swapped cables, and even hooked up my HD DVD player via component. Red screen again. I've even tried changing the positions of the component plugs just in case that somehow the EXT-HD was miswired internally, with no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas? The EXT-HD's HDMI performance is just fine, and a new satellite box is on its way. Should I just live with it the way it is, or can it be fixed? TIA!

Point your projector at the bathroom wall. Get Das Boat going on it. Install a red light bulb in your bathrooms light fixture. Stand in the shower with the plug in the tub and watch the movie.
Either that or just wait for the new one.

Does your box have the user input selection?

Another thing I happened to think about is the output setting of your sources for component output. If I'm looking at the right manual your Moome box doesn't except 480i. Needs to be 480p or higher. But not sure about that.

Both sources I tried were set for 1080i (this was verified by using the TV's "info" button, which shows resolution of the input signal) . I'd think that a failure to sync would result in a scrambled picture or no picture on my Mitsubishi. I do get a picture. It's just that it's all red and black. Thanks and keep popping those ideas out there!

Which box, Mac? The EXT-HD or satellite receiver?

I was referring to the Moome box but I'm sure you've selected it or it wouldn't work.
Having tried 2 sources and different cables to Moome box, you've pretty much eliminated that as being the problem. It really only leaves the Moome box, question is, is there a problem or some internal setting. Something else that makes me go Hmmm is you original post said your HDMI sat failed. How did you determine it was the sat box HDMI that failed. Or is the Moome malfunctioning in that input also?

Well, I was watching an HD program on the satellite box when the screen went blank, and my Onkyo receiver, which doubles as my HDMI switch, showed "no signal". I wiggled the connectors, swapped cables, changed inputs on the Onkyo. No dice. I also tried hooking the sat box directly to both HDMI inputs of the EXT-HD, with the same (no picture) result. Just to make sure that the EXT-HD wasn't giving me a false indication, I disconnected my still-working HD DVD player from the Onkyo and hooked it to each HDMI input on the EXT-HD. Both worked. So, I'm pretty sure that my sat box HDMI connection is on the fritz!

Sounds like valid tests to me. Well at this point, I also have no idea why the Moome wont work with component. I hate to say there's a problem with the Moome but unless there's some internal setting not listed in the manual, that would be my only guess. If you ever do find the problem, I'd be curious to know.

it can be fix surely, can you just connect Y on the component input, and see the picture should be gray, no color,
if have color on screen, it should be component circuit dead on EXT-HD~

Hi, Moome. I connected only the green (Y) cable as you suggested, and still got only an all red-and-black picture as before, not black-and-white as it should be.

Hi, moome. I've got my replacement satellite box operating on HDMI, so currently no need for the component input. If I did decide to send it for repair, would it be to you or the guy in Canada who was installing the fixes on the first batch EXT-HDs? Personally, I wouldn't mind trying to troubleshoot and/or repair it myself. A schematic or signal flow chart would help lots!

oh, there is a step you can test,
does your projector get sync when using component input?

I'm pretty sure it is correctly sync'ed. The picture is perfectly structured with no tearing or distortion. It's just all red and black.

ok!
please measure the VR3 by meter if you can, the value should be 5Kohm,
if under 3Kohm, the image color will not correct~
or you can try unclockwise turn the VR3 for 25turns first~

Bingo!
It was the VR3, which measured .7 ohms, and I only got a few turns counterclockwise before it started to click softly. I started turning it clockwise and saw the resistance climbing rapidly. At 25 turns, the VR hadn't yet reached its click point and was at 4.9Kohm. One more turn put it at 5.06Kohm. I reassembled it and plugged in component cables from the satellite box. The picture was perfect.
I do want to say that the VR3 wasn't adjusted this way when I first got it. I did that myself after installing the ringing and other fixes while trying to get some more gamma boost.
Thank you for your help, Moome!

Moome, I did have one other question for you. My EXT-HD has VGA output only (no DVI or BNC), but has both the VR1 and VR3 pots. Which one is the gamma range adjustment pot for the VGA output?
Thanks again for your help solving this.

thanks
