I've been watching the Samsungs and have one question...how far down the model number scale would we want to go for HT (as opposed to direct view...if that makes any difference). I see some of the model numbers start in the 300 series.
I'm not ready to buy yet with a PS3 in the house but thought I'd ask. Would the higher cost/series number equate to better processing and be worth the extra money (1400 vs 300) or is it all fluff like funky backlights and such.
Nice to see them getting more affordable. I figured once Sony recouped the money the HD battle cost them this would happen. Just in time for the holidays too.

My BD-P1400 stopped playing regular DVDs. I returned it after four months to Costco. Sticking with the PS3s.

you'de have to ask in a dedictaed BR forum I think. I know with the old HD players the better players had better chips (processors). I've also heard the 1400 and the Panny competitor both beat the PS3 in pic quality.

I heard this was just a software issue. did you have firmware 1.9?

Amazon has the Panasonic BD-30K for $245 right now. This is an excellent player, especially for CRT users because it has picture controls like gamma that can be beneficial should you want to make this kind of adjustment at the source level rather than adding a gamma device. There are other Blu Ray players out right now for less but none that can touch this one and at this price for a NEW one it's a great deal.

BDROM drives are just about to go under $100, which is pretty cool. When I decided on the $100 threshhold to jump to bluray, I figured it'd be spring 2009, so I'm happy.
Gamma on a standalone player is kind of cool. It's kind of strange that it's so rare, but I guess it's mostly irrelevant with digital displays - or, at least, anyone who cares probably won't buy the WalMart brand HDTV with the system software copied out of the chipset CDROM.

wow, that is a good deal. I'm guessing the gamma is an overall adjustment and not adjustable thorugh different portions of the curve like CRT's need right?

I do not know what software version I had at the time that I returned it. BUT, I had downloaded and installed the latest firmware at that time in an attempt to resolve the issue. I think I returned it in April-May time frame--I did post here about it, though.
