Can we say obsessed? I have school once again in less than 3 hours and I'm just going to bed to almost get 2 hours sleep...why?
Why, I was swapping out tube hardware of course so I finally can put the new tubes in the 1208! No more 2/1/5 rating left to right...I won't be quite mint, but the price was right, and 9.5/9/10 is close enough for me.
I just thought I'd share my lunacy.
Music Theory at 8's gonna be rough...

"9.5/9/10" would all be tubes that are indistinguishable from new tubes when it comes to condition.
Either they are new (10), or used, but in perfect condition with no signs of aging whatsoever (9).
There is no 9.5.
Nonetheless I'm sure you'll enjoy your much better tubes now

What if they were brand new, got installed in another projector, but it was never turned on before they were pulled? They're not NEW, but they're not NOT new...

I was once like that, then I got old
In bed by 10pm most nights now, even I think I'm a sap.
Can manage to stay up late to 10:30 on weekends though

Some of us need a lot more than 4 hours a night.... Even in my younger days I couldn't get by on less than 7 long-term. For a few nights, sure, but if I got less than ~6 hours a night for very long, I started to get sick.

I used to be able to go and go and go for weeks on ~6 hours or less, with only the occasional Saturday or Sunday morning sleep late recharge. Now? Ugh.
Add a 50-60 hr/week job, a toddler, and a 3-year old... Now, it doesn't seem to matter how much sleep I get - it's all varying degrees of "tired". 6 hours? Tired. 8 hours? Not quite as tired. 4 hours? Exhausted.
Whenever we party a little with some of our friends, we always have to be the buzz-kill, shutting things down at 2:30... I always have to tell my friends, "Look, my kids don't care whether I was up until 3am - they'll be out of bed at 7:30 regardless, and they'll want milk, snacks, entertainment...
Now, I always with I could take a nap with the kids, but it's the only "personal" time I have... so I let the wife and kids take a nap and I try to do something for myself - stuff that's perpetually on the back burner.

Not quite. I'm a music major and it's upper level theory. Form and analysis...aka to music majors as a class from hell. I love theory more than, well, 99.9999% of music majors because I'm as much composer as performer, but it's tough even for me to not want to lash out irrationally at thin air at times with some of this analyzing...

Fair enough. They're used, but the blue and red are perfect. The green has the slightest hint of, well, a hint that it's used. I wouldn't really call it wear though..it's just not quite as nice as the red/blue tubes.
edit: fractions make me feel better. I'm indecisive and I'm not the best at paying attention to some things like that...

For my entire senior year or high school sans maybe 5 or 6 days, literally, I got 2 hours or less of sleep per night. I'm not even exaggerating. It was my second year playing guitar and I just played like mad. Nothing stopped me. I was just totally obsessed. I still am half the time though the nights that I'm not I do sleep a bit more (big 4-5 hour night!) or play with the projector. Even when I was a kid I never slept too much though. I've noticed a bit of a slowdown now at 23-24 from 18-22 but it's fairly negligible. I think it's more that I got to a point where I was pretty proficient at guitar and thus could relax a little and learn to enjoy other things again like sleeping, eating, people, ya know...
It'll all make sense if I become a rockstar...that's what my friends say...

I did that in design school, too. Lots of staying up until 3, 4, 5... Get up at 8 and go to class. Next day, repeat. Etc. Of course, by then, I was non-traditional and worked part-time.
All I can tell you is, enjoy the hell out of the energy you have while you still have it. I couldn't believe the difference in energy levels from my mid-20's to even just 30. I could still do all the stuff I did... miss sleep, drink, etc... it just hurt more and took longer to recover afterward. It's like you have the same reservoir you always had, it just empties faster and takes longer to fill.
Now at 38 with full-time job (plus), kids, wife, house, cars... fuggedaboudit.
At least you used your vast energy reserves to do something really productive (learn guitar). I can't imagine the number of long nights I wasted screwing around with this, that and the other thing, none of which do me a damn bit of good now.

Well, I just hope it takes me somewhere because I love it more than anything. I don't need to be rich or famous, but I really, really hope I can plot my career in playing and writing music. If I can find enough people that "get it" to keep me afloat, I will die content. I figured the best way to get there was to just work harder and longer than anyone and to not go out until you know your ready to take flight for the long haul. You get one shot to really sorta set the stage for yourself with music. I was offered record deals on demo's back in '02 when I was starting college and if I would've taken them, I'd probably be washed up, bitter and in debt right now. Once you push "go," you better be ready or you won't last. Too many record deals, not enough real artists to stick around past the basic crap 2-record deal everyone gets. I'm gonna go neo-Eric Clapton on them all soon enough with plenty of pop-sensibility to boot.
Look out...
First check I get from touring/merch (where REAL money is made for artists) you better believe I'll have a the 909/G90 blend setup...

Cool!
Not that I want to distract you from this silly hobby with another, but do you do any recording? An audio engineer and I (computer geek) were going to roll our own Linux-based multi-channel recorder in a small form factor PC, then korg released this: http://www.korg.com/gear/info.asp?a_prod_no=mr1
The recording guy is about to tour Europe recording the great organs with this thing and array mics of his own design.

A good move. In fact, it's probably a good move to not take *any* major label deal, since they'll pretty much ensure you'll end up bitter and in debt unless you happen to move a million units. But you probably know this story by now...
I spent a good deal of my youth (ahem) learning PC tracking tools (Scream Tracker, Impulse Tracker, and now Renoise). I've probably got 10, 20 thousand hours writing. After about 15 thousand I started to be not so bad.
Anyway, if you're curious about a fellow musician/crt nut, check www.perisoft.org. Not exactly guitar music, but you never know!
