We watched the Blu-ray version of this tonight. I was pleased to see the twinkling of the light in the snow, and much more detail elsewhere in the picture. The color just popped out, and the blacks weren't too shabby either. Considering that Halloween is the wife's fave holiday, this is probably he fave movie next to The Grinch.
As to whether or not it was worth the price, I do not think so. But, this was a treat for the wife, so it was a good investment.

I'm not sure I have heard of this movie. Do you mean Nightmare Before CHRISTMAS?

I have the DVD but will get the Blu Ray eventually. I don't know why they charge so much for it. BJ's is the cheapest place near me that has it for $29.99

Because of the forced double-format. You get to have a copy for you PSP as well. Did you not get the evil message about Hell (ahem, Disneyland) policy?

Let me help you out here since you seem to have never seen this abbreviation:
Xmas - Abbreviation for Christmas, replacing "Christ" with the first letter in the Greek for Christ, chi ("X").

I recorded this from one of the movie channels to D-VHS. My guess is that it is the same transfer--do you know if it is or not?

No idea. D-VHS, huh. Boy, I'd be scared of tape--but only because I watch movies too repeatedly to trust tape not to deteriorate.

Yeah, magnetic media is scary--I can't believe they put hard drives in computers! Guess you only launch your browser a couple times per year because you are too scared it is going to wear out, huh?
People think they watch things all the time and the simple fact is that most people don't watch things more than few times. You don't watch the same movie 1 time per month, but even if you did, that would only be 12 times per year. If magnetic media could not handle that light usage, we'd be in big trouble with out computer usage!

C'mon Dave, there's a *BIG* difference between hard drives and tape. Hard drives run in a near-cleanroom environment, with the read head never touching the magnetic surface. Tapes drag and scrape across the read heads. Maybe there's not enough wear to damage digital tapes within any reasonable amount of watching, but the tapes are subject to a lot more wear than a hard drive. Equating them because they're both magnetic media is like equating a Porsche and a tricycle because they both have wheels.

It was a bit of hyperbole, but magnetic tape was used as the primary computer storage mechanism for years and has been proven to have a life far greater than you could ever need for movie watching. I've got tapes that have been recorded over 10 times and show no degradation of performance.

I don't know. Was it pillarboxed/OAR on your copy? High-Def Digest has great things to say about this version. I think Disney seems to be doing some great work with BD, so far.

Sounds like a keeper if you're into Tim Burton.

True Dave, but I wonder if D-VHS tapes and drives are manufactured to the standards they used for computer tape drives?

You didn't get my point at all. I never picked on magnetic storage, but rather 'tape', which is flexible and constantly bent every time you play it. And it is one thing to have an emulsion dry up causing bad storage sectors, and another when you are trying to accelerate this on a flexible substrate.
And sense I did not choose to pick on magnetic as a storage technology you can broaden your understanding of my point, now, when its a even more beneficial to have something like an optical media for pre-recorded media than tape. Sorry, tape is just poo on reel for video.
