I will also post some pictures of the challenge I am facing in mounting this thing properly.

I have contacted my engineering buddy and he is guiding me through the process.

It seems I will need to slap some 3/8 plywood to the sides of the trusses, this will make the truss in effect a sheer wall, keeping it from pulling apart at the bottom from the weight, then I will span the 24" distance between the two trusses that have now been made into sheer walls, then I can mount the "what the hell do you call those things" u-channels "unistrut" to those 2x4s's and all should be well.

Now then, who knows where I can get the inserts that let the rods swivel in the unistrut? Anyone?

I have wasted no time Mr. Green

Please visit my pictures here and look closely at my issues with mounting.

http://flickr.com/photos/unkyjoe/sets/72157607111398362/

I need any and all suggestions on how best to mount this thing, I am thinking the following.

1: Unistrut with swivel inserts to overcome the tilt of the ceiling from left to right across the width of the room.
2: Eye bolts with hooks and chains

I really need you help guys, she said yes and I want to get this done before her mind changes again!

Many Thanks

If the locations will work, why not put some 2x4 stringers on top of the trusses and just hang from that? You could then hang all-thread off the stringers, suspend some nice painted black unistrut from that, and hang the projector on the unistrut. If you made the unistrut members slightly oversized, you could even slide the projector toward/away from the screen slightly.

If you have a drill press, you could easily match the ceiling angle in the drilled holes in the stringer (to remove the "swivel issue"). You'd also have full adjustability to perfectly level the unistrut by the bolts on the end of the all-thread in the ceiling.

Much cleaner than chains.

If that's as confusing to you as it sounds to me, I can sketch it up for you.

P.S The reason for the new 2x4's between the trusses is they are only 2x2, the engineer is afraid the thing is not meaty enough for lag screws, that is why he is recommending 2x4's between the trusses, the lag bolts will go into the 2x4's.

The plywood down the side of the trusses with in effect make the truss a wall "a sheer wall as he calls it" all tied together so the downward force is transferred across all the truss members. "Just in case I wasnt clear on that before." the trusses run left to right across the width "not the length" of the room.

Congratulations. Glad to hear of your success.

Hope you know I meant no hard feelings on what I posted. Just hated to see another CRT going down the drain, so to speak. You wont regret your choice.

That would work. This is what I was thinking. Nothing but some all-thread sticking out of the ceiling. Change or ignore as you see fit.

You'd probably still want to use some small pieces of plywood to tie the truss members together to create a gusset plate at or near the point where the new "stringers" sit on the trusses. You're only talking 50-odd pounds per connection, but I like to over-build everything when it's easy to do so.

Oh, and the second 2x4 is just some blocking to keep the stringer from sliding down the trusses... Just a single wood screw to hold them in place on the truss.

I don't thnik anyone said stupid, we're not THAT mean. However keeping the 8500 is the wise choice. I just hope it doesn't break a week after you hang it because that's how those things seem to happen. Laughing
4 things I would strongly suggest before you mount the machine
1) lets get that blue tube replaced to even out the screen and get some more blue output. I have a much better tube here, your free and it's a pretty easy swap. I'll walk you through it
2) Send me your neck-boards. This is pretty important because those 2 caps on the bottom REALLY need replacing. It will give a modest but unmistakable pic improvement too. 50 bucks will cover my time and return shipping.
3) remove the side panels at least and paint them Black, or all 5 pieces including the top (I personally like the Balck/Gray contrast). Rustoleum semi Gloss goes on beauifully and actually looks better than the black paint Vidikron put on their $25K Vision 3 (Marquee 8110). Confused
4) Get a proper ceiling mount bracket, there's a couple right now in Curt's FS section for around $100. they are worth every penny and will make he install 500% easier.

I predict that the 720 DLP will not get used much for movies. However if your into Football and Superbowl party's they'r great for putting up a big pic and having all the room lights on.

Google Sketch Up Pro, Gino. It's AWESOME. The best part is that there's a free version with all the functionality that most people would care about.

People ask all the time. I think I'll start a new thread I can direct folks to.

Cheers,

Draganm,

A very generous offer indeed, PM me with the information and price for shipping that blue tube and how to pay you.

I will pull the neckboards as well and send those to you.

I will also see about getting the mount from the for sale forum. You think I will be better of with that, than the unistrut? Does it have the ability to adjust in all directions like the strut? Dont you need a flat surface to mount this on? My ceiling is sloped, hence the unistrut design.

Thanks again guys for all the help.

The HD65 is on its way to me, I will get it setup eventually and post some screen shots over in the digital forum.

You'll attach the mount TO the unistrut. Mount it e.g. like crabb suggested, then bolt the mount to the strut. Bolt the rails to the projector, and hoist the rails into the mount.

Get the unistrut level before you hoist the projector. The mount will let you tilt the pj in the front-back direction (i.e. raising the image up/down), but not in the side-side direction (leveling the image).
