Yup...that was hilarious. It also means I have to stop posting.... unless I'm re-categorized to Court Jester membership...because I RARELY offer any technical information of any value. Embarassed Mostly I post opinions, stories, and innuendo and just hang out with ya'all. Thumbs Up

Seriously tho...I'm curious what the impact is (and will be) of the recent contest. We're the Lost Tribe of the Amazon; or were, but now have been found. That's a good thing from a business standpoint and I think there should be more of them. (Easy for me to say..it's not my sh*t being given away for nothing) The contest did offer a different dynamic to things for a week or so. It got alot of people to (re)visit the site; or at least out themselves to play. Perhaps we should expect a certain amount of spamming along with the positive aspects. If 'They' try to screw anyone here there's enough savvy members to catch it and kick the snot outta them.

Kal, if you don't mind me asking, has it paid off in regard to Yahoo revenue, pj sales/service, vendor member sales, etc.?

I say start a forum just for spammers. (No graphics! Links only). They're going to use bandwidth anyway....might as well give them a 'tolerated' forum to do it in. If possible, get them to pay a regular membership fee, or better yet, a higher vendor fee for their membership. Current vendors excluded of course. It may offset the increased traffic costs.

And it may provide some fun too!

Just a thought. Gotta run. I'm posting an auction on ebay for a dry shower lawn sprinkler I just this second invented. Laughing

I don't see how we can be annoyed at someone if they're not breaking any rules. We should be annoyed at ourselves for not defining the rules better. All's fair I say...

But should be change the rules? I dunno... here are my thoughts:

Only allowing someone to post in the Buy/Sell section after "X" posts is annoying and doesn't stop anyone if they want to do it. They'll just post useless content to get up to "X". This sort of limitation never works. Spammers will simply post their for-sale ads in other forums, They don't care.

Making someone wait "X" days after registration before they can post in the Buy/Sell section doesn't make sense to me. Someone can just wait "X" days and then post. It's also annoying to have to wait. There are a lot of lurkers here too, not everyone has English as a first language or wants to post. I get a TON of PM's from people asking questions that should be on the forum but they don't want to post there in case their question is viewed as silly or stupid (they've told me that). It's a tough crowd here - people just don't like to show their ignorance. (Adding this sort of delay is also extra work for me too - it's not something built into the forum)

Only allowing club member to post in the Buy/Sell section is actually the easiest to implement (dead simple actually) and is definitely the most logical but seems a little too "AVS" to me at first glance. It would certainly stop a lot of people posting parts for sale that Curt would typically sell himself. I leave it up to you guys. Keep voicing your thoughts.

This raises another question: Curt's allowing any CRT stuff to be posted for sale as long as it's not a fully-functioning projector, but given that a lot of Curt's business is selling parts and PJ cards, does that really make sense? Curt: Maybe you shouldn't allow *ANY* crt parts at all? I know people wouldn't like this, but in the end it is your business.

Kal

P.S. This, on the other hand, is frickin' funny:

Quote:
"Behold, apprentice! Before you may join the ranks of the initiated, you must pass these three tests!

First, you must tell us this: In what order do EM focus tubes wear? And what ES projector wears its green tube fastest?

Second, you must understand the meaning of the words "YOU SUCK!" and the appropriate threads in which to use them.

And Third, as your last test of true forum manhood, you must enter fixed combat with draganm and return from the thread with your dignity intact! These things you must do, and then will you win our respect and comradeship!"

Not sure I follow 100%. Do you mean do the ads and club memberships pay for the forum? Yes. At current traffic rates this forum pays for itself. Enough so that there's an interest to keep things going from my end of things. I use Google ads (not Yahoo) but the Google Terms of Service (TOS) contrast forbids me to get into details - in fact, talking about it at all is typically not allowed as it draws attention to itself. Google Ads are like Fight Club: The first rule of Google Ads is that you don't talk about Google Ads. (I'm dead serious about this... accounts get shut down for less... I've said too much already).

THat would never work. Spammers are mostly automated 'bots that post as much and everywhere they can. They don't follow rules. That's the whole definition of a spammer. If they followed rules we could simply tell them "no spamming allowed".

Put yourself in their shoes: From a business standpoint , having a 100% spammer forum is a definite way to ensure that absolutely nobody reads their posts/ads. They want their ads to end up in high traffic areas with lots of eyeballs on them. They don't care if they break rules.

My pet peeve for the day..

No.

This isn't Craigslist or Kijiji or ebay. IF you're an enthusiast, fine, post away and sell your extra stuff, if you're a glorified amateur reseller who's discovered the market fell out a few months(years?) ago, get lost.

I brought this up months ago, but was pretty much ignored, btw ....

This forum supposedly reflects a more humane approach to forum moderation, which must necessitate LESS rules, not more. Stop spammers just by deleting their accounts/posts. Spammers are easy to spot, they only post advertisements. There's no need to have a "rule" about it, just let the moderators do their thing. I'm sure Curt looks at the "Buy Sell" plenty enough to police it...

And its the selling that ruined AVS, if anyone remembers that far back...
