OK the story goes like this. I ran an ad in the local free classified ads paper wanting to buy a Barco CRT, was fishing for a set for spares to keep my current Barco 701s with minty tubes running as long as possible. I got two replies, first being a second-rate scammer (luckily didn't pay anything to that loser), second offering me a Sony 1251 with supposedly only 50 hours of use coming from a school that had upgraded to digitals shortly after acquiring this set. The set has changed owners many times - because of the size, nobody wanted to install it or didn't now how to. Obviously it has been not used for many years, and currently is sitting in a basement.

So the question is; of course this is only an entry level set, and can not be worth too much money. BUT would it be worth picking up with a few €'s just as a spare set, in case my Barco happens to blow up Smile

How's the PQ? Anybody still using these as their PJ?

Well,... I don't know Barco that much but I think it's about the same type of picture quality (based on just looking up the 701s on the product pages here). I had a 1271 and loved it. I re-tubed it and liked to run it at 480p. (I guess I would use mostly 1080i with it now.)

I would get it... unless better stuff was around.

I would pass on the Sony. It's no better than your 701s, and I would think if you were originally looking for a parts swappable backup for the Barco, then this purchase makes no sense. Be patient, a better machine will come along. I paid $600.00 US for my 1209s. Wink

you might be able to use the tubes in it on the barco, they are both 7 inch tubes, might have to do a small mod to the neck boards tho.

Yeah, originally I was looking for a potential parts donor machine for Barco. I don't believe 1251 would beat 701s in PQ, T180 tubes are IMO bright and put out a nice picture. So in that sense this purchase would be pointless too.

Nashou66: I understood Sony uses 07MP tubes? Can they be really be used in this Barco? Then maybe i could get the tubes and scrap the rest?

If your Barco has minty tubes, why bother with the tubes from the Sony? Save your time and money for a better projector.

I guess you're right jkruger... It seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle. It's just that the local market for higher end CRT's is pretty much non-existent. At some point I'm planning a road trip to central Europe, so then maybe if something suitable (with 8" or 9" tubes) will appear somewhere, I'll bite.

It's easy to get wrapped up in a bunch of older equipment. At one time not too long ago I had four old sonys here. I figure I wasted about $1000. US on them and the junk I bought to go with them. Set yours up as good as possible, and enjoy it. Keep you eyes and ears open for a nice high end unit. You will be glad you did. Prices are falling pretty fast now, and the better projectors are becoming more available as the public goes digital.
