|
|
I recently acquired a Barco Data 800 that was removed from a corporate conference room. The runtime is only 2371 hours and, as far as I can tell without pulling the lenses off, the tubes are in perfect condition so most of that must have been standby. Hence, I'd love to salvage this thing.
I set it up and plugged in an RGBs signal at 1024x768. It seemed to be working well until I tried to do spot convergence on the red tube. I got an I2C error at D4H. I have the service manual for the Barco Graphics 800 and according to it I need to replace a specific chip (IC41) on the convergence board. It will let me do all of the other parts of converging the imagine except for this so I suspect it really is that chip as opposed to something else throwing errors. First off, is it okay to use the BG service manual to diagnose this part of the BD? Are there any other tests to pin down the cause of the error or have I already found it? Also, where can I find a replacement for that chip and any advice for desoldering it?
When I switch to higher resolutions I also run into issues. If I use my computer I can go to 720p without a problem but my computer refuses to send 1080i to it. It will generate it for my monitors so I know it can do it but I think it's refusing on principle with the projector. Anyone have a way to get around this? Also, I tried connecting my XBOX 360 (the new one with HDMI out, though I'm using the VGA port and splitting that off to RGB) and it will do 1024x768 without issue as RGBs but the projector won't recognize anything higher and if I switch over to RGsB the projector either displays nothing or on rare occasions a fraction of the image (the top part) covered in static.
As an added concern, I just went through the convergence process again to see if there were any other errors and it randomly went in and out of focus. The mechanical focus adjustments were locked in place and I had simply clicked enter to move to the next step in "guided" convergence when the picture started rapidly drifting into and out of focus and accordingly getting bigger and smaller. What the hell was going on and what does it mean for the future of my projector?
Thanks for the help guys and sorry for the wall of text.
PS My hall has a BG808s we keep around for parts for our main projector. At a glance the convergence board appears very different but is there any chance I could get what I need from there?

The 800 is a completely different set over the 808. I have the convergence chips if you need one. Impossible to find on the new market, as they are a custom barco part.
Out of focus means either fluctuating HV or a bad focus block or one arcing CRT socket that is dragging the focus voltage down.
Is the pix size pulsing as well when it goes out of focus? If so, then it's lack of HV regulation, usually a bad EHT board. THe EHT board from an 808s will not work.

Oh well, I didn't really think I'd be able to swap parts given the substantial difference in age and features but I thought I would ask.

The pixel size changed with the focus.
How much are you asking for the convergence chip? How about the EHT board? If it's a lot I'd rather just part this projector out and buy a "new" one. I noticed you have a few interesting projectors for sale, if I were to part this one out I don't suppose you'd be interested in knocking a bit off one of your systems in exchange for the tubes and all?
