No. All other comparable sets are about as large and as heavy as the 808.

Consider this re the mounting: A Barco 808 is about 140 lbs. That weight is spread out over about 4 square feet or so, and over 2-4 studs depending on how you mount the set. Let's assume for a second that the projector is mounted in a basement and there's a room over the projector. If you're 'slightly' overweight like me and weigh in at 200 lbs, your feet put way more pressure on the floor over a smaller area than the projector does, yet no one is ever concerned about the floor collapsing.

As long as you hit studs with lag bolts, the set will stay on the ceiling forever.

Great.

I think I will wind up getting the Epson Powerlight 1080 UB, at least it seems to have the most bang for the buck in an LCD. Neutral

Now what to do with 2 BG808s's

Ah, so your wife's concerns aren't the aesthetics. Somehow, I suspected that. I don't mean to be an ass, but you're going to get rid of two perfectly good BG808S's and get a mediocre (at best) digital projector... because of your wife's completely irrational fears about a projector falling down? If it'll help, I can post pics of my mount right after I bolted it up. My friend and I are both hanging from the mount. I tip the scales at over 250, and my friend probably 175. So, we had somewhere north of 425 pounds hanging on the mount. I'm certain the mount wouldn't fail until it was loaded with well over 1000 pounds. Obviously, a 180-pound projector is nothing.

Does your wife get nervous in elevators? After all, it's "hanging by a thread". Bridges? Just "a few bolts" holding it all up.

I'm also a little confused that you say your media room is "buget oriented", but you're talking about a $3000 digital... BTW, I've seen the 1080UB - and I'm not impressed. To give you some idea about how I feel about it, there isn't a digital projector under $5000 that I'd even CONSIDER trading my G70 for - and I'd have to think about it at that.

Cheers,
SC

So true. Its why God made women's feet smaller ... so they could stand closer to the kitchen sink.

Hi,

My wife was against a projector from the start but over time saw how much it meant to me. See,.. We lived without a TV for pretty much the whole time we lived together and in fact we still don't have one. (I have a tuner in a PC in the basement that's been abandon-ed but TV isn't interesting to us apart from series on disc from netflix.) Anyway,.. even though we watch pre-recorded stuff she viewed the whole thing like it was a big screen TV and was very against it.

It's all about the communication. If she understands it's "your dream" you will soon find a solution. I think CRT FP is the realization of a "dream" for most of us. And I'm willing to bet most of us also value the concerns of our wives perhaps more than we admit.

Don't be so quick to give up... CRT FP is pretty much as good as you can imagine,... Give it time and tell her again and again and soon she'll be having her friends over for chick flicks and there will be peace in the neighborhood.

Maybe the thing to do is a coffee table setup for a while. I had one for a while and even went back to one for a while in one place we rented due to to low ceilings. You still get a great experience and she will soon realize (maybe) the practicality of having it up out of the way.

You could add safety cables (steel) that run through the handles and are anchored separately from the projector mount on each side. This may be overdoing it a bit but it may also be reassuring the see it there. And if something somehow did happen to the mount your family would have plenty of time to escape.

By the way, my wife shook her head and frowned the whole way until the HT was finished, and as you mentioned jask, I put her favorite movie on and won her over instantly! Now when ever guests come over it is one of the main stops on her tour of the house. She even knows how to turn the system on, now that is progress.

Look into the coffee table idea. It has worked for me although it is a bit of a pain for my 6 year old when playing games and he keeps moving into the picture.

Well as your comments have merits, my main hobby is not HT. I have plenty of leeway with my fishing, sports, and other hobbies where she has no say at all. My workshop is mine and she has zero input of what I do there. I was building this media room more for my son (10yrs old) and our family for movie nights, rockband get together with friends and a listening room for my music. I want the best quality picture I can afford and my entire media room has been very bargain basement priced, but the audio side of things is more of my thing in there with movies being about 30% for me. So with that, the question still is raised...Is there a smaller projector that will give the quality of an BG808s that may not endanger the life of my children if it was to fall from the ceiling?

If your projector were to fall from the ceiling the you used the wrong wire ties!! Shocked The excuse "What if it falls from the ceiling?", is only her stuffing your balls deeper into her purse. Twisted Evil There is no reason that if your projector is mounted properly it should ever fall from the ceiling short of an earthquake then you have more to worry about than that projector. Still if you want to get some other projector Curt is looking for an 808 for one of his clients. Razz

There was a case on AVS where a projector did fall. No one was hurt except for the projector. I think the guy used lags and missed the ceiling joist or they went in at an angle. I like SC test, hang on it to see of it will support your weight.

I stubbed my toe on my Sony after it fell off the hand cart I had it on. Does that count? Very Happy

The "man's room" is usually the garage, Curt. Mr. Green

The solution to your problem is simple: post your location.

I'm sure that one of the friendly, helpful forum members will be happy to come to your place and haul away those dangerous projectors. Very Happy

I am only going to quote that part of your post, Kent might have the solution. Find a forum member nearby that has a CRT and perhaps once she sees one in action she might change her mind.

Some battles are not worth fighting and I believe that everyone here, no matter how brassy your balls are, would admit that, and this battle isn't one I want to go round and round over. It's just not worth the energy especially when I am going to be blasting my music at all hours and her putting up with that. Again with the media room being 70% music for me it isn't as much a theater as a listening room. I am in Keller Texas so if Curt is looking for a BG808s then he has the pics I sent him about it. I'm probably going to hang onto them for a week or so before I figure out what I am going to do with these.

To be a videophile you must first be an audiophile most of here listen to music more than we watch movies, but the are lots of music on sacd that sound awesome plus the br discs that are coming out with concerts on them you cant say that its not worth the trouble of having a outstanding video to go with your stereo. the point of most media rooms is to have the total immersion, to have your senses bombarded. The only thing most of us lack is smell-o-vision. When I'm playing movies like barnyard, or Racing Stripes I have that down. To put in a digital is like poking your eyes out, not worth looking after youve watched the rainbows or so called blacks. It doesnt have to be a fight just a compromise. Find someone who is close show her how it looks how its mounted then take her to bestbutt and show her the digitals there or your big box store of choice. Digitals look fake, wrong, crap. Think of what your doing man your giving up greatness for mediocrity(not sure if thats the right term but it sounds correct.)
