I have been using a cheapo pull down flat white 1:1 screen. The other day I bought an old Da-Lite Vidio B pull down for $20.00, 80" wide, got some marks on the bottom 12" of it, but the rest is very nice. I hung it up and it looks pretty good compared to the other one. It might be slightly darker when viewed straight on but it looks much better at an angle. I figure on cutting off the bad part on the bottom, re-attaching the bottom rail and using it for a while. I have not yet gotten a really good setup done on the new PJ so I'm not sure how good that will get. What am I losing in clarity and brightness with a beaded screen?

I'm not sure if it is or not. I haven't even refocused it since hanging the beaded screen. It certainly spreads the image viewing area by at least ten degrees.

What is a "1:1 screen"?

That I do not know. They may be referring to the square shape of the screen, 70" x 70". Isn't there some kind of measurement of reflectivity also?

Ah, if it is a square screen, then yes, that is it. Square screens are 1:1, I just seem them so rarely, I didn't think that was it.

reflectivity is measured as gain. if it is a flat white screen from an "el cheapo" source, it will likely be less than 1.0 gain. Maybe around .85. A beaded screen should hotspot. Also note that glass beaded screens are retro-reflective. If used with a ceiling mount PJ, they will have a 1.0 or less gain.

<soapbox>
Honestly, why do you guys bother with el cheapo screens? You can build a laminate screen which performs so much better for $100. You can get very high quality professional screen material from Hurley ranging from $100 (true 1.0 gain) to less than $200 (up to 1.8 gain).

Honestly, if spending an extra $80 for a vastly superior image is out of the budget, you should pick another hobby.

Dave, I'm new to this hobby and am just trying things out to see for myself what the differences are in screens and stuff. I found a $20. item on craigslist and wanted to give it a try. What's wrong with that? I may build a permanent screen when I'm sure that I'm going to be staying in this house, but for now, I don't see anything wrong with experimenting.

Nothing wrong with expeirmenting (that is why I put my rant in a "<soapbox>" block. Smile

However, you can also learn from others experimenting. Yes, you picked it up for $20. That is what I figured. Like a said, $80 more would get you a very nice screen. My point was, you've either: thrown away $20 or wasted time to have to resell, or saved $80 and gotten a much worse picture. My point is sort of why bother experimenting when others have and the results are known? Why not just go with tried and true and enjoy your movie watching experience? That is all I'm saying dude.

I'd love more gain than my cheezoid BOC screen. I keep intending to build a DW screen but that would end up close to $200 by the time you get all the hardware.

I looked at Hurley quite a long time ago but I don't remember seeing that much in the <$200 range. Which screens are you referring to, Dave, and what type of mounting? I don't see any prices on their website, and it was impossible to get a salescritter to contact you the last time I tried. Superglo (1.5 gain) might be nice...
